Position Summary
We have an immediate opening for a Project Estimator to support our Specialty Construction Company. The Heavy Highway Construction Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate, competitive cost estimates for public and private heavy civil projects, including roadways, bridges, grading, drainage, utilities, and large-scale infrastructure improvements. This position plays a critical role in securing profitable work by analyzing bid documents, developing pricing strategies, and coordinating with subcontractors, suppliers, and internal project teams. LRL is seeking the right candidate to join our team and contribute to our continued growth and success.
This is a remote position that requires travel for training, visiting job sites and bid walks and also can require occasional trips to the corporate offices to work with in house estimators.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating & Preconstruction
- Review and analyze project plans, specifications, and contract requirements
- Prepare detailed quantity takeoffs for:
- Earthwork and mass grading
- Aggregate base, asphalt, and concrete pavements
- Storm drainage, culverts, structures, and utilities
- Tunnels, drilling, rock scaling and bridges
- Develop accurate cost estimates for labor, materials, equipment, trucking, and subcontracted work
- Build unit prices and full project estimates
- Conduct constructability reviews and risk assessments
Vendor & Subcontractor Procurement
- Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier bids
- Level and compare proposals to ensure scope coverage and pricing accuracy
- Develop bid tabulations and make award recommendations
- Establish and maintain strong vendor and subcontractor relationships
Bid Management
- Attend pre-bid meetings, site walks, and job walks as required
- Prepare and manage complete bid packages and bid schedules
- Ensure compliance with all owner, DOT, and municipal bid requirements
- Review bonding, insurance, wage rates, DBE participation, and special contract provisions
- Participate in final bid reviews and bid-day strategy meetings
Post-Bid Support
- Assist with bid clarifications, negotiations, and contract execution
- Conduct project handoff meetings with project management and operations teams
- Provide budget support and value engineering options as requested
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Strong analytical, organizational, and math skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills – Must be proficient in English
- Valid Real ID driver’s license for travel
- Pass a background check for E-rail SAFE
Ideal Qualifications
- 2 years of estimating experience, preferably in heavy highway or heavy civil
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Ability to manage multiple bids under tight deadlines
Job Type: Full-time
Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8-hour shift
Pay: Commensurate with current skills/qualifications, past work history experience and references.
