Position Overview:
We have an immediate opening for an Estimator Apprentice to support our Specialty Construction Company. The Estimator Apprentice will support the estimating department in preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for heavy highway and civil construction projects, including roadway, bridge, grading, drainage, and utility infrastructure. This is an entry-level position designed for individuals seeking hands-on training and long-term career advancement in heavy civil construction estimating.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Strong math skills and attention to detail
- Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word and basic computer programs
- Ability to work under deadlines and manage multiple tasks
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Reliable transportation and ability to attend site visits
- Willingness to learn heavy civil construction estimating
- Valid Real ID driver’s license for travel
- Pass a background check for E-rail SAFE
Key Responsibilities
Plan & Specification Review
- Assist in reviewing project plans, specifications, and bid documents
- Learn to interpret civil drawings, profiles, sections, and construction details
- Organize bid documents and maintain electronic estimating files
Pricing & Cost Support
- Assist in collecting and updating material, labor, equipment, and trucking costs
- Request and track vendor and subcontractor pricing
- Compare quotes and notify estimators of discrepancies
- Help assemble unit pricing with oversight
Bid Support & Administration
- Assist in preparing subcontractor bid invitations
- Track incoming subcontractor proposals
- Help prepare bid tabulations and scope comparisons
- Verify bid form requirements, insurance, and bonding needs
- Assist with bid submission preparation and post-bid documentation
Field & Production Learning
- Coordinate with project management and field personnel to:
- Collect historical production data
- Learn construction means and methods
- Attend pre-bid meetings and site walks when required
Pay: Up to $30.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40.0 per week
