Within the framework of the Loyola University New Orleans mission of educating the whole person, the head men’s and women’s swimming coach will fulfill the duties and responsibilities of the position.   Responsibilities include but are not limited to program and staff oversight, recruiting and developing student athletes, and promoting the program to the institution’s stakeholders.   Monitors and maintains the essential functions of the pool, hot tub, and cold dip to ensure they are safe and accessible to all athletes, members, and employees. This is a 12 month position.Essential Functions:
  • Provide leadership, organization, and supervision for all practices and competitions.
  • Implement and maintain standards of performance consistent with the University’s goals of academic and athletic performance.
  • Assign assistant coach(es) specific coaching and administrative responsibilities.
  • Organize and implement a recruiting program to attract outstanding student-athletes to attend Loyola University.
  • Conduct the program within the rules and regulations of the NCAA, Gulf South Conference, and the University.
  • Manage the program within the parameters of an approved budget.
  • Travel required for the purpose of competitions, recruiting, and representing the University at various functions.
  • Develop, implement, administer, market, and assess fitness programs that utilize the natatorium.
  • Hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate head lifeguard and lifeguards.
  • Oversee the Equipment and Pool Technician with natatorium maintenance activities and ensure all natatorium systems are in compliance with health and safety guidelines.
  • Coordinate ongoing training for lifeguards, including periodic in-services and certification programs.
  • Ensure that all aquatics records and reports are maintained, complete and accurate.
  • Coordinate First Aid, CPR, and AED certification programs, including departmental training, reports, and equipment maintenance.

  • Drive university vehicles (van) for matches and/or practices, as needed.
  • Coordinate fund raising projects for the program with University Advancement
  • Assist in game management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Vice President of Athletics
Additional Aquatics Responsibilities: 
  • Monitor and log the Chlorine, pH and other pool parameters levels to meet national & state mandated water quality standards.
  • Add chemicals when needed to adjust the pool chemical levels to meet state and national mandated standards.
  • Fill, Clean, and Monitor the Pulsar pool chlorinator.
  • Order CO2 cylinders and acid as needed to control pH and alkalinity levels in the pool.
  • Transport CO2 containers from the first floor storage room (rm# 104) to pump room (rm# 406) as needed.
  • Hook-up and disconnect CO2 cylinders from the pH controller when pressure gauges indicate so.
  • Operate and maintain the dolphin 100 robot pool vacuum
  • Backwash the pool filters as needed when influent & effluent gages indicate so, generally on a bimonthly basis.
  • Weekly pool brushing to ensure pool cleanliness
  • Weekly shutdown and cleaning of the hot tub and cold dip therapy tubs.
  • Order and store chlorine and other chemicals as needed for the pool and therapy tubs.
  • Monitoring of pool temperature and contacting Central Plant as needed to maintain the pool temperature.
  • Meet annually with the university chemical hygiene officer to assure best practices regarding chemical hygiene, storage and to assure we are meeting OSHA policy relating to chemical storage and documentation such as updating SDS sheets etc.
  • Work with outside vendors as needed to maintain the water circulation and chemical automation systems for the pool i.e. order needed parts and utilize outside vendor expertise
Minimum of a baccalaureate, master’s degree preferred; 
Minimum of three years successful coaching experience; expertise in technical aspects of swimming with respect to national rules and regulations, safety guidelines, and swimming techniques; 
Must possess and maintain a current valid driver’s license as a condition of employment, and must also be able to successfully pass any driver background information investigation and any driver education courses required by Risk Management; current CPR and AED certifications; 
Ability to work effectively with college student- athletes, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the community; a philosophy on intercollegiate athletics which places the highest emphasis on the pre-eminence of the academic mission of the institution and the role of athletics as a part of the student’s total educational experience for both the student-athlete and the student non-athlete; a well-developed personal system of ethical values that will be used as the basis for supervising and developing the intercollegiate program. 
Must have active certified pool operator credentials.   

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The person must be able to drive/transport athletes.  Must be able to set up and take down swimming equipment.  Also able to lift, move, and carry up to 25lbs. Ability to perform the job duties with or without a reasonable accommodation.
