Responsible for leading community center operations and activities to provide recreational, educational and cultural opportunities for Lower Merion Township (Township). Work involves planning, reviewing and evaluating program effectiveness while supervising day-to-day operations. Makes decisions regarding technical aspects of programming and operations. Oversees community center fundraising activities, develops budget and prepares and submits grant applications.
Position supervises employees and schedules day-to-day work activities to provide optimum efficiency and productivity. Position requires a general understanding of the assigned function, business area and anticipated operational demands.
Works under the direction of the Assistant Director of Recreation.Coordinates staff activities to ensure personnel, material and supply needs are met.
Schedules, assigns, supervises and evaluates volunteers and program staff.
Reviews operations and directs program implementation.
Participates in teaching and supervising activities.
Completes forms, employee time records and necessary reports.
Trains and advises employees; administers union contract language; conducts employee performance evaluations.
Coordinates fundraising activities including preparing and submitting grant applications.
Assists with budget development and controlling expenditures within fund allocations.
Recommends fees for community center programs and activities.
Orders and coordinates delivery of supplies and equipment for all programs.
Initiates, organizes and conducts meetings with representatives of community groups and other agencies to determine community recreational and educational needs and to promote programs and activities.
Follows Township and public safety guidelines and protocols and performs job functions in a safe manner; reports all safety hazards per established policies and procedures.
Ensures that all cleaning, lighting, repair, security and any other facility related issues are reported to the proper authority.
Interacts professionally with residents or businesses; provides assistance and addresses inquiries or concerns.
Responds to inquiries, questions and comments from the public per established standards and protocols; responds to and resolves difficult and sensitive inquiries, issues and complaints.
Assesses, plans and implements best practice standards ensuring compliance with all regulatory and funding agencies; compiles and submits data for trend analysis and regulatory reporting.
Assists in preparation of annual operating budget and capital improvement planning (CIP) for community center facilities.
Assists Township Risk Control Manager with liability, auto, workers’ compensation and property loss claim investigations as needed.
Upholds strict confidentiality in dealing with sensitive information, including personnel matters, legal documents, financial data, contracts, and other proprietary information.
Attends and participates in group meetings; stays current on new trends and best practices.
Required to work outside regular shift including some evening and weekend hours based on organizational responsibilities and assignments.
May be assigned to other departments or divisions to perform required duties, as needed.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Reviews and evaluates work methods and procedures; meets with management staff to identify and resolve problems.
Assesses and monitors workload; identifies opportunities for improvement and implements changes.
Selects, motivates and evaluates personnel; provides or coordinates staff training; works with employees to correct deficiencies; makes recommendations regarding discipline and termination.
High school diploma or GED and seven (7) years of increasingly responsible community recreation program experience, including previous lead worker experience;
Must successfully pass all conditions of employment which may include a pre-employment physical.
Required to pass and maintain Child Protective Service Law (CPSL) clearances.
Must have first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification or ability to obtain within class constraints.
Must complete Reasonable Suspicion for Drug and Alcohol Testing training within class constraints.
Valid driver’s license is preferred.
Knowledge of principles and practices of business and public administration as applied to management of community center facilities.
Knowledge of theories, principles and practices of recreation program administration for citizens of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
Knowledge of recreational program development, implementation and trends.
Knowledge of fundraising methods and techniques, including writing grant applications.
Knowledge of the principles, practices, methodologies and techniques utilized to effectively manage and motivate a diverse workforce.

OR associate degree in recreation administration or a related field and five (5) years of experience as listed above;
OR bachelor’s degree in recreational administration or a related field and three (3) years of experience as listed above;
OR a combination of experience, certification, education and training that demonstrates expertise in the related areas.
