Summary Objective

The purpose of this position is to oversee the planning, coordination, and administration of agriculture and community garden programs, ensuring high-quality services that meet the diverse needs of the community.

This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Examples of Duties

Essential Functions

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Supervises and evaluates staff, addressing concerns, directing work, providing guidance, and conducting performance reviews.
  • Coordinates and monitors work assignments, schedules, and quality standards; provides direction and support as needed.
  • Provides responsive, solution-oriented customer service to program participants and the public, resolving inquiries and ensuring a positive experience.
  • Develops and leads public programming on gardening, sustainable agriculture, and environmental stewardship.
  • Collaborates with community centers to deliver gardening and agriculture programming and maintain educational gardens at those sites.
  • Coordinates and leads public groups including volunteers, school groups, Master Gardeners, etc. to support garden maintenance and education.
  • Administers the registration and assignment of community garden plots.
  • Monitors garden sites for safety, cleanliness, and compliance with department policies.
  • Maintains records of plot assignments, participant engagement, and program outcomes.
  • Serves as liaison with partner agencies involved in urban agriculture, including nonprofits, schools, and cooperative extensions.
  • Assist in budget preparation and grant applications related to community gardening and agriculture.
  • Promotes the program through outreach, marketing, and community engagement.
  • Responds to public inquiries and resolves issues related to garden operations.

Minimum Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Environmental Science, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • One (1) year of community garden, urban agriculture, environmental education, public administration, or related experience.

Equivalency

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

Other Minimum Requirements

  • Must be available to work a varied schedule, including nights and weekends.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history. Empty heading

Physical Demands

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

  • Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all the time including exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis.

Unavoidable Hazards (work Environment)

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

  • Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
    • Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
    • Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
    • Animals/wildlife.
