STEM Instructor (Part-Time)

Loudoun Test Prep
Ashburn, VA Part Time
POSTED ON 8/28/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 12/26/2026

Company Overview

Loudoun Test Prep is a highly-rated, locally focused tutoring company specializing in small-group and individual test prep, where mentorship matters as much as scores. We have taught our STEM admissions program for a highly competitive local STEM magnet high school for the past 11 consecutive years, helping middle school students prepare for the admissions process. This is an immediate-start, part-time position. We are seeking candidates with varying availability, and preference will be given to those interested in pursuing a long-term relationship with our company.

Job Description: As a STEM Instructor for Loudoun Test Prep, you'll teach students in our admissions preparation program for a highly competitive local STEM magnet high school. Rather than focusing on traditional classroom math, you'll help students develop critical reasoning, out-of-the-box algebraic thinking, spatial reasoning, technology-based logic, and scientific reasoning. Our classes are discussion-driven rather than lecture-based, with just 6–8 students per class. Students collaborate to analyze, debate, and defend their answers while you guide the conversation and help them develop stronger problem-solving skills.

Hours: Classes are taught in 7-week sessions and consistent availability throughout each 7-week session is essential for both instructors and students.

Tutoring primarily takes place on weekday evenings (approximately 5:30–9:30 PM) and weekends. During the summer, additional weekday daytime teaching opportunities are available.

Your assigned schedule will be based on the availability you commit to. For example, if you're available on Saturdays, Sundays, and two weekday evenings, you'll be assigned classes and/or individual tutoring during those times for the duration of the session.

Compensation: $35-40/hr starting wage, varies according to experience and qualifications. All candidates participate in a paid 4-8 week long training/shadowing program, compensated at 50% of the tutoring rate.

Hours per week: Between 15-25 hours per week, depending on candidate availability.

Job Type: Part-time W2 Employee

We are an equal employment opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender (or gender identity), national origin, disability status, sexual orientation, protected veteran status or any other characteristic protected by law.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Teach critical reasoning, logic, spatial thinking, and problem-solving strategies
  • Lead collaborative, question-based classes of 6-8 students in which students discuss, defend, and debate their answers
  • Review homework with students in class, guiding them to correct missed questions and reverse-engineer solutions
  • Administer and review proprietary practice assessments, tracking student progress over the program
  • Communicate student progress to parents through formal progress reports and our messaging system
  • Ensure that all approaches and interactions with students encourage psychological well-being
  • Reliable transportation is an absolute must.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field, Mathematics, Engineering, or Educational Studies (required)
  • Experience working with middle school students is highly desirable
  • Strong logic, spatial reasoning, and critical thinking skills

Knowledge, Skill Sets, and Qualities:

To really excel in this job, the ideal candidate would be great at:

  • Communicating effectively with students and parents
  • Facilitating group discussion and drawing out student reasoning rather than lecturing
  • Explaining logic and problem-solving strategies in more than one way
  • Ability to problem solve and think critically in different situations

Skills and Traits We Value:

  • Clear, confident communicators who love helping others learn.
  • Problem-solvers who reflect on their own reasoning and enjoy discussing different approaches.
  • Organized, punctual, and professional.
  • Curious thinkers who enjoy intellectual challenges and thoughtful discussion.
  • Supportive mentors who build students' confidence, as well as their skills.

Also Hiring: We are also hiring SAT/ACT Math Tutors for our high school test prep programs. Many of our instructors teach in both our middle school and high school programs, so if you're interested in working with students across a wider range of grade levels, we encourage you to view our SAT/ACT Math Tutor posting as well..
