Job Description

  • To maintain and repair all hotel equipment, systems and building components in compliance with hotel engineering standards. As a union-classified Maintenance Engineer, you are responsible for ensuring the property remains safe, comfortable, operationally efficient, and guest-ready.

 

Responsibilities to include some and/or all the following:

  • Provide friendly, courteous service in accordance with standard procedures
  • Maintain all equipment, systems and building components including, but not limited to: mechanical and electrical systems, pumps, HVAC (heating, ventilation & air-conditioning), refrigeration, plumbing, locks, furniture, wall coverings, tile, paint, tile and other equipment.
  • Perform repairs, remodel work, preventative maintenance (PMs) and emergency work as assigned to keep property in excellent condition.
  • Install and replace lighting fixtures/bulbs; inspect, test and troubleshoot machinery and equipment; dismantle defective machines or parts and install new or repaired ones.
  • Undertake carpentry, painting, minor drywall/finishing, tile/ceiling repair, furniture & fixture repair/fabrication as needed.
  • Clean & maintain carpets, rugs, floors, backs of house areas; transport heavy boxes/packages when required and assist with new equipment deliveries/setup (TVs, mattresses, beds, furniture) when needed.
  • Respond to guest and departmental maintenance requests in a timely, professional, and guest-centric manner.
  • Maintain compliance with all safety, building, local and federal codes. Assist with inspections, vendor coordination and documentation as required.
  • Work shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and be available for on-call rotation per union contract.
  • Communicate with the Chief Engineer about project status, parts needed, vendor services, and any other issues affecting property operations.
  • Union-job-specific: Adhere to the terms of the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) including job bidding, overtime assignment, shift rotations, classification of work, time-and-hour rules, tools allowance, and safety gear provisions (as per the union).
  • Document work performed, parts used, labor hours (including overtime/shift differential), and maintain logs/work orders in the hotel’s maintenance management system.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; trade certification or vocational/technical training in HVAC, electrical or plumbing is preferred
  • Membership of the Local 399 Union is required.
  • Previous experience in hotel maintenance/engineering or a comparable commercial / building maintenance environment preferred.
  • Proficient in multiple trades: HVAC, plumbing, electrical, refrigeration, carpentry, painting; ability to troubleshoot mechanical/electrical systems.
  • Ability to read blueprints, service manuals, and electrical/plumbing schematics (especially important in a union role).
  • Ability to lift, push, pull and carry up to [insert weight] (often 50 lbs or more) and be physically able to access all areas of the property (roofs, mechanical rooms, guest rooms, housekeeping areas, exterior grounds, etc.).
  • Flexible schedule: able to work nights, weekends, holidays, and respond to emergencies.
  • Good verbal/written communication skills in English (additional languages a plus).
  • Work usually performed inside and outside hotel property (guest rooms, corridors, rooftop mechanical systems, etc.). Variable temperature and noise conditions, exposure to dust, chemical/cleaning agents, fumes, etc.
  • Must be able to climb ladders, work at heights, operate power tools, lift heavy items, kneel, bend, crouch, etc.
  • Regular exposure to guest-areas; must maintain professional courteous demeanor at all times.
