What are the responsibilities and job description for the Reserve Firefighter position at Los Osos Community Services District?
Under general supervision of higher-ranking officers, responds to fire, rescue, medical, and storm response alarms and other emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance to protect life and property; performs fire suppression and EMS duties; may drive and operate fire apparatus and other associated equipment; and does other related work as required.
TYPICAL TASKS:
Responds to fire, rescue, and storm response alarms and other emergency and non-
emergency calls for assistance, performing all EMS, fire service, and other duties as
required; operates fire, rescue, medical, and storm response equipment to protect life and property; may drive and operate all types of emergency fire apparatus, automotive equipment, pumps and generators during emergency and non-emergency situations; performs station, apparatus and equipment service, tests and maintenance, prepares limited records, logs and reports; participates in training and drills for shift and reserve personnel; educates the public in fire prevention, home and industrial fire safety, CPR, first aid and disaster preparedness; may perform routine fire safety inspections with fire companies; may operate computers for basic fire and business applications; may be assigned to special projects and details; regularly performs both routine and emergency work.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Ability to learn or possess basic knowledge of:
- Modern firefighting methods and equipment;
- Accepted emergency medical service practices
- Maintenance and operation of fire and rescue apparatus and equipment
- Local geography, roads and water supply systems
- Fire and building codes and ordinances pertaining to fire prevention, building construction, fire suppression and fire and life safety;
- Hazardous materials operations;
- Incident command system;
- basic computer operations and applications.
Ability to:
- Implement modern firefighting methods, fire and storm response equipment operation and maintenance, rescue, EMS procedures and communication techniques;
- Assist in the enforcement of fire codes and ordinances pertaining to fire prevention, fire suppression and fire safety;
- Learn to diagnose minor equipment problems and implement effective corrective action under supervision;
- Learn to analyze fire and rescue situations and implement effective actions;
- Learn to operate computers effectively;
- Live and work effectively in with others;
- Follow written and verbal instructions;
- Communicate orally and in writing effectively;
- Meet and deal with the public and co-workers tactfully and courteously.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school; or graduation of a state certified firefighter 1 academy.
License/Certificates:
- Possession of current California Emergency Medical Technician 1 Certification and completion of a state certified firefighter 1 academy is very desirable and will be given preference in hiring.
- A valid Class “C” license is required at the time of application. DMV pull notice status will be filed on all firefighter employees.
- All required certificates and licenses must be maintained throughout employment.
OTHER CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Physical: Applicants shall be examined by a licensed physician and must be found to be free from any physical, emotional or mental condition that might adversely affect performance of their duties as a Firefighter.
- Hours: Employees in these positions may be required to work holidays, weekends, and irregular hours.
