Job Duties/Responsibilities An Asbestos Abatement Assistant assist in the repair, removal, disposal,
or encapsulation of asbestos-containing building materials. Some typical
duties will require that a job incumbent:
- Seals off work areas, washes or vacuums surfaces, secures plastic
sheets to walls and floor, covers equipment with plastic sheets, and
mops up or picks up debris.
- Builds a three-phase decontamination chamber consisting of a clean
room with suits and towels, a shower chamber, and a storage area for
contaminated equipment.
- Sets up an air filtration unit, which filters asbestos out of the air and
decontaminates the unit after the work is completed. Assists in the repair,
removal, or encapsulation of insulation and building materials that
contain asbestos.
- Performs heavy labor, such as carrying, moving, and delivering
equipment, machinery, building supplies, and bags of debris.
- Performs minor maintenance or repairs on equipment.
- Uses common hand tools and operates simple power tools related to
asbestos abatement, such as pneumatic tools, saws, drills, and other
items.

Minimum Requirements Education:
Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational
proficiency.
Experience:
Six months of experience involving maintenance and/or repair of
buildings, equipment, appliances, or grounds, using hand and small
power tools, or moving and installing equipment or furniture. Completion
of the AHERA Worker accreditation course may substitute for the
required experience.
Special:
- A valid California Driver License.
- Use of an automobile.
- A commercial driver license with HazMat Endorsement may be required
for some positions.
All employees must be fully COVID-19 vaccinated and must be able to
provide verification of their vaccination status as part of the hiring and
onboarding process prior to an official offer of employment to any District
site; this includes current employees who are being promoted to a new
job class.
Desirable Qualifications The ideal Asbestos Abatement Assistant candidate will possess a strong
understanding of the job-related knowledge related to:
- Methods for lifting and moving heavy objects
- Common safety practices in equipment handling and the use of manual
and power tools
- Safety practices and regulations pertaining to asbestos abatement work
Additionally, we are seeking candidates with a demonstrated ability to
recognize conditions that are safety hazards or require the attention of
skilled craft personnel
Special Physical Requirements:
- Ability to crawl under buildings and in tunnels
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, crawl, reach overhead, crouch, kneel,
balance, push, pull, and lift up to 100 lbs
- Ability to work safely at heights including the use of ladders, scaffolds,
and other related equipment
- Ability to work safely in confined spaces
- Ability to do physical work under conditions involving temperature
extremes

Selection and promotion are based on a competitive employment
assessment process. Candidates who pass all parts of the assessment
process are placed on a hiring (eligibility) list based on their assessment
score. Hiring departments may make job offers to candidates on the top
three ranks of the hiring list. Eligibility typically lasts for 12 months. The
