Description

The engineering associate role will assist the Systems Engineering team with traction power and facilities electrical engineering. Contributes to significant transit projects, including the East San Fernando Valley LRT, Southeast Gateway Line LRT, Eastside Phase 2, and the K line extension to Torrance, in addition to other ongoing Metro initiatives. Provides intermediate-level engineering support to Operations and support department projects in order to deliver service that is reliable, safe, and efficient for Metro customers and employees.

Examples of Duties

  • Compiles and analyzes data for engineering projects; recommends materials and equipment
  • Provides engineering support for various departments
  • Reads and interprets system drawings for all lines
  • Assists in preparing feasibility studies / engineering reports and in managing smaller projects
  • Develops scopes of work for projects
  • Prepares plans, sketches, specifications, and estimates for design, construction, and modification of Metro facilities
  • Reviews consultants' plans, sketches, certifications, and related documents for compliance with Metro standards and requirements
  • Troubleshoots, modifies, and repairs engineering systems, software, and equipment issues
  • Develops and researches permanent and sustainable solutions for issues; plans and implements preventive maintenance programs
  • Prepares project reports and correspondence
  • Performs project control activities, such as budget and schedule reviews
  • Develops procedures for maintaining remote terminal units and computer systems for various applications
  • Provides guidance and assistance to new or entry-level employees in operating engineering systems, software, and equipment
  • Updates databases and maintains records of changes
  • Represents Metro with construction / engineering / supplier community
  • May respond to site emergencies

Minimum Qualifications

A combination of education and / or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Additional experience, as outlined below, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis. A typical combination includes :

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Electronics, Computer Science, or a related field; Master's Degree in a related field preferred
  • Experience

  • One year of relevant experience performing engineering work in appropriate discipline; some positions in this class may require specialized experience in area of assignment
  • Certifications / Licenses / Special Requirements

  • Professional Engineer License preferred
  • A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions

  • Experience working with Traction Power Substations and / or Facilities Electrical Engineering, including maintenance and project execution.
  • Experience working on a major rail transit capital project for one year.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certificate, or the ability to obtain one within two years preferred.

  • Comprehending electrical wiring diagrams and drawings
  • Compiling and analyzing complex data
  • Communicating effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to (defined as a present competence to perform an observable behavior or produce an observable result)

  • Analyze situations, identify problems, and recommend solutions
  • Understand, interpret, and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, contracts, budgets, and labor / management agreements
  • Interact professionally with various levels of Metro employees and outside representatives

    Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance - PTSC provides $50,000 coverage for each employee. Additional voluntary coverage in amounts up to $500,000 is available at favorable premium rates.

    Long-Term Disability Insurance - 100% employer paid. Provides employees with a minimum income of 60% of earnings after six months of disability. Buy up or buy down options available.

    Years of Service Annual Accrual

    Hire date - 5 years 20 days

    Pension Plan - PTSC retirement plan is the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Vesting is five (5) years. Minimum retirement age is 52, based on the 2% at 62 formula.
