The LA County Board of Supervisors recently declared a local state of emergency for homelessness, and the County is working to revise and expand our response to help all who are affected. We are looking for qualified and passionate individuals to help us in the mission of addressing issues like housing, mental health, and substance use. The Department of Homeless Services and Housing is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Staff Assistant I vacancies related to the homelessness crisis.
Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment.
During your initial work period, you will be assessed on your work performance. This assessment will be weighted 100%.
Those who successfully pass the assessment will be considered for permanent appointment to Staff Assistant I position.
Essential Job Functions
- Analyzes and makes recommendations to the unit manager for the resolution of problems of work procedure and space allocation; and may participate in the implementation of changes resulting from recommendations.
- Prepares reports and projections of workload and staffing for the manager of the unit.
- Coordinates and resolves problems between the unit served and departmental housekeeping, payroll, personnel, and reproduction services.
- Has responsibility for evaluating, ordering maintaining, loaning, and inventorying supplies and equipment, and for resolving procurement problems with the departmental supply officer.
- Supervises clerical personnel with responsibility for assigning and reviewing work, orientation, training, development and evaluation of work performance.
Requirements
OPTION II: One (1) years' experience in a highly responsible secretarial capacity at the level of Secretary III or higher.
OPTION III: One (1) years' experience in a responsible supervisory clerical capacity at the level of Intermediate Supervising Clerk or Intermediate Supervising Typist-Clerk or higher.

Special Requirement Information
- Staff Capacity means having done work in an organization, the primary purpose is to assist and support administration in the efficient operation of its function by doing research into matters such as: utilization of personnel; allocation of funds/budgeting; workloads and workload fluctuations; legislative analysis; programs or procedures for accomplishing work objectives; and developing recommendations as a result of the above research.
Experience at the level of Los Angeles County's class of Administrative Aid is defined as under close supervision, performing beginning level administrative staff work by participating in making investigations of operating problems in a County department. Acceptable classes at the level of Administrative Aid are, but may not be limited to: Staff Assistant, PSS, Board Specialist, Accountant I, Program Aid I, CEO, or higher.
Experience at the level of Los Angeles County's class of Secretary III is defined as functioning as secretary to either (1) the head of a major section in a large and complex County department, (2) the head of a minor section in Health Services, or (3) the head of a major unit in either (a) a department headed by an elected official of the County of Los Angeles, (b) a department headed by an appointed official who provides immediate advisory services to the Board of Supervisors, or (c) the Department of the Public Defender.
Experience at the level of Los Angeles County's class of Intermediate Supervising Clerk is defined as supervising a large number of employees performing general and specialized office clerical work or a smaller number performing more diversified and difficult duties.
Experience at the level of Los Angeles County's class of Intermediate Supervising Typist-Clerk is defined as through subordinate supervisors, supervises a large number of employees performing general and specialized office clerical work or a smaller number performing more diversified and difficult duties, and uses computers and other keyboarding equipment to perform skilled typing and keyboarding work. Acceptable classes at the level of Intermediate Supervising Clerk and Intermediate Supervising Typist Clerk are but may not be limited to: Supervising Sheriff Station Clerk, Library Assistant I, Supervising Payroll Clerk, Senior Legal Office Support Assistant, or higher.

- Experience working for a public homelessness services agency providing direct field-based services, such as LAHSA, within the last 6 months.
- Two (2) years of experience within the last three (3) years coordinating operational workflows, communications, and issue resolution between Managed Care Plans, contracted providers, and internal program units.
- One (1) year of experience or more within the last three (3) years coordinating communications and resolving operational issues with Interim Housing contracted providers or related community-based service providers.
