What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deputy City Attorney II/III position at Los Angeles City Attorney's Office (CA)?
The Public Rights Branch pursues civil enforcement matters, including complex, high impact matters, focusing on a variety of areas including unfair business and housing practices, wage theft, environmental protection, consumer protection, nuisance abatement and cannabis regulation. The Branch uses a variety of statutory authorities, including the Unfair Competition Law, the False Advertising Law, the Public Nuisance Law and various Health & Safety Code regulations. The Branch also pursues False Claims Act and other civil claims, and engages in debt collection for the City.
The attorney selected for this position will be assigned to investigate and prosecute civil actions concerning the Branch’s practice areas, as assigned.
- Licensed to practice law in all courts in the State of California;
- Demonstrated ability to handle investigations, civil enforcement actions and other civil litigation matters from start to finish with limited supervision;
- Minimum five (5) years substantive civil litigation and trial experience, including experience drafting and filing pleadings, pursuing material evidence through civil discovery or pre-litigation investigations, litigating complex legal issues, engaging in multi-party settlement negotiations, and trying complex cases;
- Experience litigating document intensive matters;
- Demonstrated high-level written and oral communication skills;
- Strong analytical and strategic skills;
- Substantial experience taking and defending depositions and drafting and arguing dispositive motions;
- Willingness and enthusiasm to handle matters in any and all of the Branch’s subject matter areas; and
- Strong desire to serve the public interest.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience working with governmental agencies, elected officials, public officials, and individual residents;
- Demonstrated ability to litigate high impact matters;
- Experience with eDiscovery platforms such as Relativity;
- Experience in one or more of the Branch’s subject matter areas.

Probation
Appointment to this exempt position (non Civil-Service) will be subject to a two year probationary period as required by Section 1050 of the City Charter. Successful completion of the two-year probationary period will result in tenure with the office.
Classification
For internal applicants only – Placement in this position will initially be as a lateral transfer with the selected candidate assuming the position in their current classification.
