Hours: 11:30 AM–4:30 PM, Thu–Sun (minimum 2 days/week)
Classification: Part-Time Hourly (Non-Exempt)
Wage: $22/hour
Position Summary
The Visitor Services Associate is the welcoming face of Los Altos History Museum. As a vital front-line presence, this member of our team ensures every visitor enjoys a smooth and engaging experience. This position blends hospitality, retail support, and operational coordination to foster a deep connection between the community and the Museum’s mission.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as visitors’ primary point of contact, warmly greeting all guests to the Museum and providing them with information on exhibits, events, wayfinding, and museum amenities.
- Accurately record visitor information to support museum engagement goals.
- Provide guidance to volunteer docents at the front desk and manage general administrative flow (e.g., phones, deliveries, and guest notifications for staff) with attention to detail in communications.
- Clearly and courteously communicate museum policies, safety guidelines, and accessibility information.
- Encourage museum membership purchases and promote mailing list enrollment.
- Maintain a professional, organized, and inviting atmosphere at the front desk and in public museum spaces. Light janitorial duties as needed.
- Report facility issues and/or security concerns promptly to management.
- Perform daily opening/closing procedures, including disarming/arming the alarm system, unlocking/locking restrooms, putting out/taking in “open” signage from the parking lot, checking all exhibits for functionality, and completing a site walkthrough at end of shift.
- Staff the Museum store as needed. Process purchases using Square POS system.
- Availability to work at least two days Thursday–Sunday, 11:30 AM–4:30 PM. Additional responsibilities, projects, and work hours (e.g., operational support for rental events and programs, leading tours) possible on an as-needed basis.
Required Skills
- Strong customer service orientation with a friendly, patient, flexible, and professional attitude.
- Excellent English verbal communication skills.
- Basic computer proficiency (i.e., email, web, POS systems).
- Punctual and reliable.
- A collaborative spirit able to work independently or alongside staff and volunteers.
- Commitment to inclusivity and maintaining the highest standards of professional decorum.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods and move throughout the museum complex, including spending time outdoors and climbing historic stairs.
- Ability to perform light physical tasks, including moving materials up to 25 pounds unassisted.
Desired Experience
- Prior experience in museums, hospitality, or nonprofit settings is preferred but not required.
