What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either Production Control Specialist level 1 or level 2, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

DP (Detonator Production) Division is the premier Production Agency (PA) assigned to produce WR (War Reserve) detonators for the Nation's nuclear stockpile security mission. The Division is part of LANL's Weapons Production Directorate, and is comprised of a team of motivated, highly skilled technical and operational support staff working in an integrated format. The organization is centered on high-rigor manufacturing operations to produce precision, safe and reliable WR detonator products. DP partners closely with customers and stakeholders such as NNSA (National Nuclear Security Administration), Weapon System Design Agencies (LANL, Sandia, and Livermore), and LANL program management orgs to deliver on uniquely challenging, high-consequence National security objectives. DP upholds vigorous teamwork, personal integrity, respectful workplace, and continuous improvement in operations, technical excellence, safety and security.

DP-5 is seeking a candidate to become part of the Production Planning and Control (PPC) team. The successful candidate will report directly to the Detonator Production DP-5 management team and collaborate closely with SMEs (Subject Matter Experts) and colleagues on production planning and work control. The DP-5 Production Planning and Control team manages detonator production work planning, scheduling, and manufacturing workflow throughout the Production Agency (PA) manufacturing life cycle at Technical Area TA-22, including manufacturing War Reserve (WR) High-Explosive (HE) detonator products.

Production Controls Specialist 1 ($60,500-$93,600)

As a Production Specialist I, the selected candidate provides production and manufacturing support across the Production Agency's manufacturing lifecycle. Responsibilities include assisting in the development, maintenance, and monitoring of production schedules, supporting manufacturing workflow, and coordinating work planning to meet mission requirements.

Production Controls Specialist 2 ($72,800-$115,400)

In addition to the responsibilities outlined at the lower level, the selected candidate will possess thorough knowledge of relevant Laboratory policies, procedures, and standards governing production operations. The candidate should demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of scheduled work and the interactions among work groups, ensuring effective coordination and seamless handoffs required to successfully complete production activities.

At this level, the Production Control Specialist 2 is expected to proactively drive problem-solving efforts and coordinate with organizational stakeholders to maximize production efficiency and availability. The candidate will lead schedule management meetings involving large, cross-functional audiences, facilitating communication, identifying risks, and ensuring alignment of production priorities across teams.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Manufacturing Environment: Knowledge of work processes in a manufacturing work environment, utilizing a resource planning system.
  • Teaming: Experience, being successful working independently, receiving guidance from SMEs, as well as working effectively in a team environment; high emphasis on customer service and mission success is expected.
  • Process and Procedures: Experience adhering to and enforcing manufacturing planning processes and procedures.
  • Organization Skills: Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and follow through to complete multiple tasks, often under strict deadlines, frequent interruptions, and changing priorities.
  • Project Management: Experience with project-oriented work environments, tracking progress, and monitoring performance.

Education/Experience at Production Control Specialist 1: Position requires a minimum of 2 years of related experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with WR (War Reserve) and R&D production manufacturing processes.
  • Material Requirement Planning: Knowledge and/or prior experience working in an MRP/ERP like system
  • Basic skills in Microsoft Office products such as Excel and Word.
  • Experience in project and program management, including planning, organizing, and resource management

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Production Controls Specialist 2 level requires:

  • Demonstrated ability to lead production coordination activities and facilitate large schedule management meetings.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to collaborate across multiple work groups and resolve scheduling or workflow conflicts.
  • Experience using enterprise-level scheduling systems and production planning tools
  • Advance P6 experience
  • Demonstrated advanced ability to conceptualize and communicate major elements of facility operations and operational quality assurance to both technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Demonstrated advanced ability to field, prioritize and resolve multiple emergent issues simultaneously.

Education/Experience at Production Control Specialist 2: Position requires 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with WR (War Reserve) and R&D production manufacturing processes.
  • Material Requirement Planning: Knowledge and/or prior experience working in an MRP/ERP like system
  • Basic skills in Microsoft Office products such as Excel and Word.
  • Experience in project and program management, including planning, organizing, and resource management.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
