What You Will Do

The Utility and Infrastructure (UI) Operations is seeking a motivated Operations Manager 2. The selected candidate will report to the UI Operations Group Leader and will be responsible for leadership, technical direction and oversight of UI Division activities and operations in the primary area of Steam and Electrical Systems; and will include an understanding of the following: Steam and Condensate System, Combustion Gas Turbine Generator Systems, high and medium voltage electric distribution systems. The Operations Manager will ensure deployed functions (e.g. ESH&Q, Engineering, Maintenance) are accountable for their performance to support the safe operations in their respective areas of responsibility. The Operations Manager will participate in the duty officer program; and be available to respond to off-hours operational emergencies.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Full understanding of integrated work management, hazard analysis, safety practices, configuration management, and lock-out/tag-out policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated skill in management, supervision, and human resources administration of assigned employees.
  • Full knowledge of government regulations affecting operations management.
  • Ability to understand and interpret various physical, mechanical, and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, and schematics.
  • Demonstrated experience in the preparation and presentation of oral and written reports.


Training/Certifications: This position may be subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities. This DOE Order establishes entry-level requirements to ensure employees in the positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

Education/Experience: Typically requires a bachelor's degree and 3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Active Q Clearance
  • Experience in Utility Standards
  • Experience with oversight of utilities operators and union craft.

Essential Job Functions(can perform with or without reasonable accommodation):

Ability to hear in a normal range (500 to 3000 htz), climbing stairs, climbing ladders, and bending, crouching, lifting 5 to 10 pounds and carrying 5 to 10 pounds.

Work Environment:

Indoors office and control room setting, outdoors in a cold or hot environment in a widely ranging ambient temperature, working irregular hours as necessary, operation of motor vehicles, work in a noisy environment at times, work under unusual lighting, work near electrical substations and switchgear, work near machinery with moving parts, headgear or head protection, safety glasses or eye protection, hearing protection, gloves or hand protection, safety shoes or protective foot gear.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.
