This position will be filled at either the Industrial Hygiene & Safety Professional 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional responsibilities will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Reporting to the Occupational Safety & Health (OSH) Industrial Safety and Hygiene (ISH) Safety Leader, the Industrial Hygiene and Safety (IH&S) Professional is responsible for developing, recommending, and implementing programs and procedures associated with the evaluation and control of potential health and safety hazards.

This role provides integrated Environment, Safety, and Health (ESH) support across a wide range of laboratory, research, and industrial operations.

The selected candidate will provide daily program support to programmatic and facility organizations to ensure worker protection, compliance with Laboratory ISH requirements, and support of mission success.

The IH&S Professional will use professional concepts and Laboratory objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways and contribute to the development of new methods and approaches. This role requires close collaboration with the workforce to solve complex IH and/or safety problems requiring in-depth analysis.

IH&S Professional 3 ($106,400 - $176,000)

An IH&S Professional 3 works under limited direction and applies advanced technical knowledge to solve complex industrial hygiene and/or safety problems.

The successful candidate will:

  • Apply advanced safety principles to evaluate hazards and exposures.
  • Perform complex analysis of work activities, hazards, and data.
  • Design and implement exposure assessment and/or hazard evaluation strategies.
  • Provide technical guidance to line organizations.
  • Support program implementation and continuous improvement efforts.

IH&S Professional 4 ($117,200 - $195,400)

An IH&S Professional 4 is a recognized expert who operates with significant independence and serves as a technical authority.

In addition to the responsibilities of the lower level, the IH&S Professional 4 will:

  • Develop, recommend, and implement IH and/or safety programs and strategies across the Laboratory.
  • Lead complex evaluations and control strategies for high-risk operations.
  • Provide expert interpretation of regulations and standards across multiple safety disciplines.
  • Contribute to the development of new methods, techniques, and program improvements.
  • Collaborate across organizations to resolve complex challenges requiring in-depth analysis.
  • Influence program direction and support mission-critical decisions.

May serve as a technical authority in industrial safety, or integrated safety disciplines, depending on organizational needs.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements (applies to both levels):

  • Strong knowledge and experience implementing industrial hygiene and/or safety risk assessments and corrective actions.
  • Experience identifying, applying, and interpreting federal codes, standards, and regulations (DOE, OSHA) across multiple safety program areas.
  • Experience conducting qualitative and/or quantitative exposure or hazard assessments, including use of relevant tools and instrumentation.
  • Ability to analyze hazards/exposures and implement appropriate controls using the hierarchy of controls.
  • Strong communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE "Q" clearance.

Additional Job Requirements For IH&S Professional 4

  • Expert-level knowledge and experience implementing industrial hygiene and/or safety risk assessments and corrective actions.
  • Expert-level experience interpreting and applying regulations across multiple disciplines (e.g., ventilation, chemical safety, pressure safety, non-ionizing radiation, forklift safety, oxygen deficiency, confined space, fall protection, electrical safety, medical surveillance, hearing conservation).
  • Expert-level knowledge of exposure assessment and/or hazard evaluation methodologies.
  • Expert-level ability to communicate complex technical information clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve highly complex ESH problems and contribute to program development.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Expert knowledge of DOE and regulatory requirements in a research environment.
  • Broad knowledge of Laboratory organizations, operations, and activities.
  • Experience with IH and/or safety data collection and analysis tools.
  • Advanced degree in industrial hygiene, safety, or related field.
  • Professional certifications such as CIH, CSP, or similar.
  • Active DOE clearance.

Education/Experience:

IH&S Professional 3: Bachelor's degree in a related technical discipline and a minimum of 8 years of related experience, or equivalent combination.

IH&S Professional 4: Bachelor's degree in a related technical discipline and a minimum of 12 years of related experience, or equivalent combination.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Directive 206.2: Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: The higher level position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
