What You Will Do

Reporting to the Occupational Safety and Health - Industrial Safety and Hygiene (OSH-ISH) Group, the Health and Safety (H&S) Tech will be responsible for supporting the Respiratory Protection Program (RPP) and other health and safety duties, as assigned. The OSH-ISH group is a key component of the OSH Division, within the ESHQ Associate Level Directorate (ALD).

The Respiratory Protection Technician will support the Respiratory Protection Program, as needed, to help train LANL employees on the use, inspection, and fit testing of all forms of respiratory protection, including, N95's, Half-Mask and Full-Face tight-fitting air-purifying respirators, and tight-fitting and loose-fitting powered air-purifying respirators and potentially more. The technician may also train LANL employees on the use of the different respirator cartridges to protect them from different airborne contaminants. Additionally, they may assist with scheduling employees for fit-testing and training appointments. The technician may also be required to become a Designated Purchase Requestor (DPR) and assist with equipment purchases and equipment distribution duties.

The H&S Tech will perform work in an office setting as well as supporting the RPP team in the fit testing/training room. RPP "customers" work in non-reactor nuclear and chemical facilities where radioactive materials and chemicals are used. Possibly utilizing personal protective clothing, dosimetry, self-monitoring, and bioassay monitoring as a condition to access and work in many LANL facilities.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Ability to perform routine technical tasks independently under general supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to follow established procedures and apply standard health and safety practices
  • General knowledge of industrial hygiene and safety principles, including hazard recognition and control
  • Ability to assist with sample collection, field measurements, inspections, and exposure assessments
  • Basic understanding of OSHA regulations, NFPA codes, and applicable federal and Laboratory safety requirements
  • Ability to support respiratory protection activities, including fit testing, equipment handling, and training support
  • Experience compiling, documenting, and maintaining accurate records and reports
  • Proficiency with standard office software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and data systems
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively in team and customer-focused environments

Education/Experience: Position typically requires a High School Diploma and 1-2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2: Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.
