What You Will Do

The Environmental Protection and Compliance, Compliance Programs (EPC-CP) Group is seeking outstanding candidates for the position of Deployed Environmental Professional (DEP) Team Leader. EPC-CP is responsible for environmental site compliance activities across Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL or the Laboratory), through close collaboration with Laboratory programs and facilities, the Department of Energy (DOE), and state and federal regulators. You will lead a team of diverse environmental professionals providing assistance to assure the numerous environmental requirements applicable to the Laboratory are met.

This position reports to the EPC-CP Group Leader.

As the DEP Team Leader, you have an opportunity to provide technical leadership, oversight, and management of this group of professionals. You will participate in the development and achievement of goals for programmatic, business and operational excellence. A successful candidate will have experience with strategic planning and tactical execution, ensuring operational excellence, business excellence, and delivering excellent customer service including maintaining effective relationships. You will oversee the organization's compliance strategy while developing and implementing cost effective and compliant operations, activities and programs. An effective Team Leader will engage with team members, peers, and various partners across LANL to develop and maintain the capabilities necessary to support programmatic mission success through resource allocation, succession planning, mentoring, recruiting and retaining qualified staff.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with federal and New Mexico environmental regulations, policies and procedures, including those related to: water quality, air quality, biological resources, pollution prevention, cultural resources, NEPA, and hazardous waste, etc. The team's responsibilities cover all of these subject areas.
  • Demonstrated effective technical leadership that emphasizes organizational skills, strategic and tactical planning, team building, program development, project management, budget preparation, financial management and business plan development.
  • Demonstrated experience with collaboration across a large variety of organizational boundaries and the ability to manage customer and stakeholder relationships in a positive manner.
  • Exemplary interpersonal, communication (both written and verbal) and relationship building skills.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

The candidate selected for this position will be most competitive when they possess the following knowledge and skills:

  • Knowledge of the Laboratory's environmental protection policies, practices and procedures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with implementing federal and state codes, standards and regulations in several environmental areas, such as National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits, NMED Groundwater Discharge Permits, Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure Plans, Title V air permitting, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) requirements, etc.
  • Strong experience as a line supervisor or mid-level manager of a small (10-25 employees) technical and programmatic organization specializing in supporting projects and operations with similar size and complexity as those at the Laboratory. This includes responsibility for providing performance feedback, de-escalating tense situations, and building trust across teams in potentially adversarial environments.
  • Environmental certifications such as Certified Inspector of Sediment and Erosion Control (CISEC), Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Registered Environmental Manager, EPA Method 9 Opacity Certification.
  • Proven ability to lead and manage diverse teams effectively, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills to foster collaboration, resolve conflicts, and coordinate seamlessly with cross- functional departments and external stakeholders.

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Sitting, standing, climbing stairs, reaching overhead, reaching down, bending, stooping, lifting 30 pounds and carrying 30 pounds.

Work Environment: Safety glasses or eye protection, gloves or hand protection, safety shoes or protective footgear, hearing protection, operation of motor vehicle.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Note to Applicants:

  • This position is predominantly office work, with occasional field support work that can include work at elevation (rooftops), in industrial settings and working near sources of radiological contamination or ionizing radiation.
  • This position may require the ability to work swing-shift and weekends.
  • Minimal travel for attending periodic training and related conferences.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified informof Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. Please refer to Policy Policy P701 for applicant eligibility requirements.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
