What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Software Developer 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Weapons Research Services - Secure Networks and Assurance (WRS-SNA) group is looking for an early career Cyber Assurance Assessor to work within the Nuclear Weapons Cyber Assurance Laboratory (NWCAL). This is an excellent opportunity to leverage academic expertise in the development of advanced concepts related to hardware and software assurance.

The Cyber Assurance Assessor will work with our assessment team to provide technical assurance to hardware and software used within the Nuclear Security Enterprise. Areas of responsibility for this position include participating in assessments for Operational Technology Assurance, Factory Acceptance Tests and others. This position will provide growth opportunities in the areas of hardware assurance and software security.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Cybersecurity Technical Staff 1 ($87,800 - $143,000)

  • Knowledge and experience in one or more of the following subject areas: system administration, process engineering, or operating or managing Operational Technology (OT) systems.
  • Knowledge and experience in the application of established methods for hardware and software assurance.
  • Knowledge of, or experience with, file system and host-based forensics, including analysis of operating system artifacts, logs, and endpoint activity for security assessment purposes.
  • Experience utilizing host-based or digital forensics tools to collect, analyze, or interpret system artifacts (e.g., file systems, logs, process activity) in support of security or assurance activities.
  • Experience establishing and improving processes used to provide assurance in a production or manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to analyze systems for indicators of compromise, misconfigurations, or anomalous behavior in support of assurance activities.
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced environment as part of a team.
  • Ability to obtain a DOE-Q Clearance is required.

Cybersecurity Technical Staff 2 ($96,600 - $158,000)

In addition to what is outlined at level 1, level 2 will be responsible for:

  • Proficiency performing host-based or file system forensic analysis, including artifact identification, timeline reconstruction, and interpretation of findings.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently utilize digital forensics tools to analyze system state and support security or assurance conclusions.
  • Ability to identify indicators of compromise, misconfigurations, or anomalous behavior and assess their impact to system assurance.
  • Experience translating technical findings into actionable recommendations.
  • Experience assessing the security posture of enterprise, cyber-physical, or Operational Technology (OT) systems.
  • Understanding of system internals (e.g., operating systems, file systems, logging mechanisms) sufficient to support detailed technical analysis.

Education/Experience:

Cybersecurity Technical Staff 1: Position requires a bachelor's degree in a technical field and a minimum of 2 years' related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Cybersecurity Technical Staff 2: Position requires a bachelor's degree in a technical field and a minimum of 5 years' related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level post graduate work may be expected.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and experience with the NNSA Nuclear Enterprise Assurance Program.
  • Knowledge and experience assessing the security of cyber-physical systems, Industrial Control Systems (ICS), or Operational Technology (OT) environments.
  • Experience with industry-standard digital forensics tools (e.g., Autopsy/Sleuth Kit, EnCase, FTK, Velociraptor, or similar) and techniques such as timeline analysis or artifact parsing.
  • Active DOE-Q Clearance.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
