Overview

This position involves mostly field work and requires a high level of physical fitness, strong decision-making skills, and expert skiing ability. Patrollers support the Ski Patrol team in emergency response, mountain safety and awareness and guest service. Successful performance requires the ability to fulfill each essential duty.

Responsibilities

KEY JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Full attendance at the Loon Mountain Ski Patrol Refresher is mandatory.
  • Current medical certification is required. (EMT or National Ski Patrol’s Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC)).
  • Current BLS CPR certification is required.
  • Expert skiing or riding skills with suitable gear for expert terrain and all-weather conditions. Some gear will be provided by Loon Mountain.
  • Ability to learn basic knowledge of knots, systems and rope management skills.
  • Compliance with all resort policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND ADDITIONAL SKILLS include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Demonstrate strong communication, guest service, leadership and decision-making skills.
  • Work collaboratively with others and maintain professionalism under stress.
  • Basic understanding of ski resort operations.
  • Must successfully complete a criminal history and background check.
  • Attend scheduled morning meetings daily, prepared for patrol. End-of-day responsibilities may extend until all guests, patrollers and staff are off the mountain.
  • Be on standby awaiting emergency calls.
  • Patrol assigned mountain areas regularly to ensure trails are marked, identify injured, lost, reckless, or out of control individuals, and monitor hazards weather and skiing conditions.
  • Stop reckless skiers or snowboarders, enforce company safety regulations, implement disciplinary actions and assist with safety educational.
  • Perform trail maintenance, check for hazards or missing signs, mark hazards, clear brush; pack and shovel snow, set up fences and close trails as necessary.
  • Execute trail opening and closing procedures.
  • Locate missing persons and equipment.
  • Monitor organized racing activities and other special events.
  • Provide emergency care and first aid to injured skiers and snowboarders; assess and stabilize patients, administer treatment, (such as splinting), and transport to base area via toboggan.
  • Assist uninjured guests experiencing difficulties or equipment issues, transporting them to base area as needed and offering directions or information.

Responsibilities To Safety

  • Ensure the safety of self, colleagues and guests at all times.
  • Promptly report potentially harmful equipment or situations to the Patrol Manager.
  • Immediately report safety-related accidents or incidents to the immediate supervisor.
  • Adhere to all company and department safety policies and procedures.
  • Operate equipment safely to avoid injury to yourself or others.
  • Drive in compliance with legal requirements and resort policies.

Qualifications

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in a professional manner.

Mathematical Skills

Basic math skills required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here represent those necessary to perform the job’s essential functions. Reasonable accommodations may be considered for individuals with disabilities.

Duties regularly require advanced skiing or snowboarding skills, able to navigate all terrain and weather conditions. Frequent reaching, climbing, balancing, talking and hearing are necessary. Occasionally, sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling may be required. Frequent lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds and occasional lifting and/or moving of more than 50 pounds is expected. Depth perception is required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is regularly performed outdoors, requiring skiing or riding in all conditions. Frequent exposure to wet or humid conditions, high and precarious places, and extreme cold is expected. The noise level is typically moderate.
