Hours: 5 days per week — 3 days from 8:15 AM–3:20 PM and 2 days from 8:15 AM–4:45 PM

About the Position

Longview School is seeking a warm, grounded, and dependable 1:1 Student Support Aide for a bright middle school student who benefits from having consistent adult support throughout the school day.

This student has many strengths and has demonstrated meaningful growth. He benefits from having a trusted adult who can get to know him well and help him navigate emotional regulation, social interactions, transitions, academic expectations, and the everyday challenges of being part of a school community.

This is more than an academic support position. We are looking for someone who genuinely enjoys working with young people and can build a positive relationship with this student while helping him develop greater confidence, self-awareness, regulation, and independence.

About Longview

Longview is a small, innovative democratic school where students have meaningful ownership of their education and their community.

Students participate in school decision-making, help shape their educational experiences, and learn through discussion, projects, experimentation, problem-solving, and authentic work.

Socio-emotional development is an important part of our model. We want students to become resourceful, independent, confident, self-aware, and socially capable young adults.

We recognize that students may need different kinds of support to be successful. At the same time, we help all students understand how they affect the people around them, take responsibility when things don't go as planned, and learn how to repair and move forward.

What the Student Needs

The student benefits from having one consistent adult who knows him well, recognizes when he may need some extra support, and can help him navigate challenging moments successfully.

The aide will support him in:

  • navigating emotions, frustration, and transitions;
  • building positive relationships with peers;
  • recognizing when he needs support and developing strategies that work for him;
  • engaging with academic work and managing organization and executive-function demands;
  • participating in classes, school meetings, chores, and other parts of community life;
  • developing greater awareness of social cues, boundaries, and how his words and actions affect others;
  • reflecting on challenging situations and participating in restorative conversations when needed; and
  • building greater confidence and independence over time.

At times, the student may need additional support navigating strong emotions or challenging moments. The aide should be someone who can remain calm and reassuring, help the student use strategies to regulate and move forward, and work closely with school staff to support the student and the larger community.

What We're Looking For

More than any particular credential, we are looking for someone who is a great match for this student and our school.

The ideal candidate is:

  • calm, patient, and emotionally grounded;
  • warm, encouraging, and able to build strong relationships with adolescents;
  • comfortable providing consistency and clear expectations;
  • able to stay supportive and steady during challenging moments;
  • observant and able to recognize when a student may need additional support;
  • collaborative, flexible, and receptive to feedback;
  • interested in helping a young person learn from difficult moments and continue moving forward;
  • able to balance providing support with encouraging independence; and
  • genuinely interested in Longview's democratic educational model.

Experience in special education, behavioral or emotional support, mental health, youth development, therapeutic education, neurodiversity, restorative practices, or 1:1 support is a plus.

We prefer candidates to have a Bachelor's Degree, but we will consider applicants without one who have substantial relevant professional or life experience.

English fluency is required.

What Success Looks Like

We are looking for someone who gets to know this student as a whole person—his personality, interests, strengths, challenges, sense of humor, and the things that help him feel successful.

A successful aide will build a trusting relationship with him while helping him develop strategies for navigating emotions, relationships, school expectations, and challenging situations.

Over time, the goal is for the student to become increasingly confident and independent, with the aide knowing when to offer support and when to give him room to use the skills he is developing on his own.
