Title: Mortgage Underwriter
Department: Loan Operations
Status: Full-Time, Hourly, Non-Exempt
Schedule: Monday - Friday, daytime shifts plus rotating Saturday mornings. Work location will be assigned based on selected candidate's residence. This is not a remote / work from home position.

The Mortgage Underwriter reports directly to the Chief Lending Officer or appointed designee. Responsibilities include underwriting all loans- Conventional: Government and Portfolio loans to meet all Investor Guidelines. Keeping mortgage team members informed and up to date on program guideline changes. Understanding and maintaining workflow within the department, adjusting priorities daily to ensure all timelines are met. Understanding and assist in completing loans within the processes in place for Quality Control as well as Adverse Actions.
Primary Duties:
- Answer phone/customer inquiries, provide excellent customer service to all customers.
- Responsible for underwriting secondary market loans.
- Knowledge of Conventional, FHA, VA, GRH, and in-house loan programs.
- Inform and assist in training department staff on current guidelines and changes as they occur.
- Be a source of information for all questions regarding investor guidelines.
- Underwrite and Decision loans based on document review to meet investor guidelines.
- Review and Clear conditions on loan files.
- Assist in Post-Closing Investor Conditions.
- Be a resource for Loan officers and processors to find solutions to challenging issues.
- Keep current on industry and policy changes to guidelines and compliance (ie. ATR/QM, HMDA).
- Assist in timely review and completion of Adverse Action loans.
- Assist Department Management in loan review for Quality Control.
- Audit files periodically to verify procedure is being followed and if enhancements can be made.
- Engage in open dialogue daily with department management for ongoing issues and enhancements to the procedures.
- Engage in open dialogue about the workflow process and technologies used, finding enhancements to the process as well as the road blocks.
- Other tasks as assigned or as warranted with ongoing development.
- Perform teller duties on the Saturday rotation, during lunches, and/or other times as needed.
- Cross sell Bank products and services.
- Complete all training as required by management.
- Complies with BSA/AML training and reports any suspicious activity to BSA officer.
- Complies with all Bank policies and banking regulations.
- Any and all other duties as might be assigned to you.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
- 3–5 years of mortgage underwriting experience, including secondary market loans.
- Strong knowledge of mortgage loan products, including Conventional, FHA, VA, GRH, and portfolio/in-house programs.
- In-depth understanding of investor guidelines and regulatory requirements (e.g., ATR/QM, HMDA).
- Experience reviewing loan documentation, clearing conditions, and issuing underwriting decisions.
- Familiarity with post-closing processes, investor conditions, and quality control procedures.
- Working knowledge of loan origination systems and underwriting tools.
- Strong customer service experience, including handling borrower and internal inquiries.
- Ability to manage multiple loan files and meet strict deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Relevant certifications (e.g., DE Underwriter, VA SAR designation) preferred.
