Speech and Language Assistant (FTE 1.0)

REPORTS TO:Director of Pupil Services, and Building Principal JOB GOAL:To help reduce or eliminate speech and language disabilities that interfere with the individual student's ability to derive full benefit from the district's educational program. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: under the supervision of a certified Speech Therapist. 1. Serves as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for oral communication and speech improvement. 2. Provides a therapeutic program to address the speech and language needs of eligible students. 3. Assists and guides teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech and language disabled children. 4. Interprets assessments of speech, voice, and language impairments. 5. Provides screening to identify speech and language disabled children at regular intervals and at specified levels. 6. Assists in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialist in the community as appropriate. 7. Collaborates with classroom teachers and other school staff members to implement therapy by suggestion for the student's daily activities. 8. Provides information, support, and counseling to parents and families when appropriate. 9. Provides inservice education and serves as a consultant to teachers and school staff members on topics concerning speech improvement. 10. Keeps thorough ongoing records for individual students receiving therapy or other school provided speech and language services. 11. Such other duties as may be assigned. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Environmental conditions are a means of describing the physical surroundings of a worker in a specific job. This position is performed in a school setting where the environmental conditions should have no effect on how the job is performed. Noise: Level 3 – Moderate level of intensity. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:Salary and work year in accordance with current Longmeadow Educators Association (Unit E) and Longmeadow School Committee Agreement.
