ABOUT THE POSITION

Long Beach Community College District is currently seeking two (2) full-time tenure track English Composition Generalist Professor commencing in the Fall 2026 semester. The primary assignment involves teaching all levels of composition and other English courses. This assignment also includes curriculum and program development, participation in department, division, college committees, and participatory governance activities. Faculty are expected to collaborate across disciplines, to make effective use of student support resources, to participate in ongoing professional development, and to assume leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole. The teaching assignment may be at the Liberal Arts campus, the Trades, Technology, and Community Learning campus or other college teaching locations. The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online or off campus and is subject to change as needed. The ideal candidate for this position embraces the overall mission of the Long Beach Community College District, with a focused commitment to excellence in teaching and student success through the discipline of English.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master's in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition, OR

• Bachelor's in any of the above AND Master's in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing or journalism,

All candidates must demonstrate

Evidence of a sensitivity, understanding, and ability to manage the classroom environment AND effectively provide instruction to community college students of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.

Desirable Qualifications

Professional knowledge and teaching experience

• Demonstrated ability to teach academic writing, reading, critical thinking, rhetoric and literacy skills to first-time college students and multilingual students.

• Demonstrated knowledge of and current experience in college composition theory and research.

• Demonstrated ability to communicate well both orally and in writing.

• Recent experience in working with community college students in composition courses and a willingness in using evidence-based, culturally responsive, and equity-minded instructional practices, including teaching in learning communities (e.g., Puente, Umoja, MANA, Male Success Initiative)

• Demonstrated excellence in teaching using different modalities, including asynchronous and hybrid online courses.

Institutional experience

• Recent community college or lower division teaching experience.

• Understanding of and commitment to the mission of community colleges and similar open-admissions institutions.

• Knowledge of various California educational initiatives that impact teaching and learning in the community college system.

• Collaboration across disciplines and utilization of student support resources to foster student success.

• Participation in department, division, college committees, and participatory governance activities.

• Participation in curriculum, program, and faculty professional development.

• Commitment to understand and serve the needs of the student, department, college, and community.

• Commitment to work collegially and collaboratively within the department and college community by fostering and supporting culturally responsive norms, adhering to policies, regulations, and processes, and developing and contributing to environments that stimulate innovation, free thought, and mutual respect.

Sensitivity to students of diverse backgrounds and abilities

• Demonstrated sensitivity to issues of diversity and ability to motivate and teach community college students of diverse ethnic, racial, and economic backgrounds, sexual orientations, genders, cultures, and learning styles, as well as students with disabilities or varied levels of academic preparation.

• Commitment to create a dynamic learning environment that prioritizes instructor/student interaction.

• Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within English courses.

Experience with data-driven assessment

• Recent experience in evaluating and analyzing institution-wide and course-level success and Student Learning Outcomes data.

• Ability to self-reflect and respond to an evidence-based assessment of student learning.

• Commitment to understand and apply both institutional and course data.
