What are the responsibilities and job description for the SMT Repair and Rework Technician position at Lonestar EMS, LLC?
Job Summary
The SMT Repair and Rework Technician is responsible for performing precision component-level troubleshooting, repair, and rework on complex Printed Circuit Assemblies (PCAs). This role requires exceptional hand-soldering skills, a deep understanding of Surface Mount Technology (SMT) processes, and the ability to work under magnification to ensure all repaired boards meet strict quality and IPC standards.
Core Responsibilities
· Perform advanced component-level troubleshooting, diagnostic testing, and failure analysis on defective SMT and through-hole printed circuit board assemblies.
· Execute precise rework and repair of complex components, including fine-pitch QFPs, BGAs, CSPs, LGAs, PLCCs, and passives (down to 0201/01005 sizes).
· Execute high-reliability hand soldering, lead trimming, and touch-up operations in compliance with IPC-A-610 and IPC/WHMA-A-620 standards.
· Operate specialized rework equipment such as hot air stations, infrared (IR) BGA rework systems, and microscope inspection systems.
· Safely remove and replace damaged surface mount and through-hole components without causing thermal or mechanical damage to the PCB substrate or adjacent components.
· Properly clean and inspect assemblies post-rework to remove flux residues and contaminants.
· Maintain detailed logs of repairs, defect trends, and scrap data to support continuous improvement and root-cause analysis initiatives.
· Collaborate with Quality Assurance and production engineering teams to identify recurring manufacturing defects and recommend corrective actions.
Required Qualifications
· Experience: Minimum of 2–5 years of hands-on experience in SMT repair, rework, and advanced hand soldering within an electronics manufacturing environment (EMS).
· Certifications: Active or recent IPC-A-610 and IPC-7711/7721 (Rework, Modification, and Repair of Electronic Assemblies) certifications are strongly preferred.
Technical Skills:
o Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, schematics, assembly drawings, bill of materials (BOMs), and IPC work instructions.
o Expert-level manual dexterity and steady hands for fine-pitch component manipulation under a microscope.
o Familiarity with standard lab test equipment (multimeters, oscilloscopes, digital microscopes).
· Soft Skills: Strong attention to detail, excellent problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills to collaborate across production teams.
