EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
Provide health services to students who require basic first aid, medication administration, and uses professional nursing judgment in performing procedures and tasks as indicated by a student’s health care provider. Provide care in emergency situations and communicates with parents, school administration, or emergency personnel when necessary. Documents nursing services and student health services provided by the nurse in the district’s computerized student information system. Collaborates with school administration, staff, and AEA for student health services and student individualized health plans.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Under general supervision of the Board of Directors, the School Nurse performs the following responsibilities within the overarching framework of the state-mandated standard.
- Collaborates with school administration to develop and implement a district-wide health plan;
- Recommends modification of school programs to meet student’s health needs;
- Assists school personnel in establishing sanitary and safe conditions in schools;
- Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases through preventive immunization programs, early detection, surveillance, and reporting of contagious diseases;
- Delegate, determines competency with return skills, supervises, monitors, and evaluates non-licensed personnel performing health procedures;
- Maintains appropriate health records and protects the confidentiality of data;
- Provides necessary health information for student Individualized Education Programs (IEP);
- Develops Individualized Health Care Plans (IHP) as needed;
- Provides necessary health information for student 504 plans;
- Conducts school health service, including nursing assessment and screenings;
- Facilitates student access to physical and mental health services;
- Administers aid for a student or staff member who has suffered injury or emergency illness;
- Communicates with school administration, parents, school personnel, health care providers, and other agencies on school health matters;
- Provides medication and other health procedures as necessary;
- Promotes sound nutritional practices;
- Administers the Medicaid program;
- Provides leadership and support for staff wellness plans;
- Participates in the design and development of health curricula; and/or
- District writes additional essential function(s)
If School Nurse serves as the district’s US Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing program collector: Select from the following:
- Implements and conducts the drug and alcohol testing programs;
- Completes collector training and recertification as needed;
- Complies with US Department of Transportation Urine Specimen Collection Procedures Guidelines;
- Complies with US Department of Transportation Substance Abuse Professional Guidelines
- Ensures proper collection of saliva and/or specimen samples; and/or
- District writes additional essential function(s)
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES DESIRE:
Education and Licensure:
- Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university
- Licensed Registered Nurse (RN).
- NOTE: The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) may not be employed or practice as an independent school nurse. However, an LPN may practice nursing in the school setting under the supervision and direction of an RN or physician in the same building. The LPN may also provide nursing care to a specific student under the supervision and delegation of an RN employed by the school district
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Statement of Professional Recognition (SPR)
Knowledge and Skills:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrates strong organizational skills.
- Able to read, analyze, interpret, and implement ideas contained in technical documents, assessment data, professional journal, and regulations.
- Competent in research and information-gathering through technology.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Salary and benefits are to be determined by the board
- NOTE: The School Nurse’s salary and other terms of employment may be collectively bargained in the district’s master contract
EVALUATION:
The School Nurse will be evaluated by the Superintendent at least annually in accordance with law, board policy, and the preceding job description.
