Job Description

Job Summary: The Patient Navigator-Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)-Transplant and Cellular Therapy Program works under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), Medical Doctor (MD) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) to provide developmentally appropriate and age-specific direct and indirect patient care in a fast- paced Transplant and Cellular Therapy (TCT) program in the Children’s Hospital outpatient clinic setting, serving patients from birth to 26 years of age or older with suspected or confirmed malignancies or hematologic disorder(s). Performs designated procedures and treatments which require knowledge and technical expertise within the LVN scope of practice and in accordance with established policies, procedures, protocols, techniques, and guidelines. Recognizes and reports signs and symptoms of complications and/or allergic reactions immediately to the RN, MD, or NP. Exhibits mission-focused thinking and understands the sensitivity of cancer and hematologic disorder diagnoses and expresses kindness when communicating with patients/families facing the unknown of a serious critical illness. Orients patients/families to the clinic routine and prepares patients for examination. Assists MD or NP with examination and procedures as requested. Ensures insurance authorizations, tests results, appropriate coding, and other required information is available for the provider for review. Follows-up on designated case management and navigation activities as requested by the RN, MD, or NP. Demonstrates flexibility and willingly floats to other areas as assigned. Performs other duties as needed.

Education and Experience: Graduate of a school of vocational nursing required. Minimum six months experience as an LVN or one year of experience as a Medical Assistant (MA) in a physician back-office setting required. Minimum one-year clinical experience in oncology or hematology nursing, infusion center, or clinic preferred.

Knowledge and Skills: Demonstrates solid knowledge of oncology/hematology disease process and treatments. Able to read, write legibly and speak in English (and Spanish preferred) with professional quality; use computer, printer and software programs necessary to the position, e.g., Microsoft Office, Outlook, electronic event reporting program, established organization electronic medical record; operate and troubleshoot equipment utilized for position; perform basic patient care activities using proper body mechanics and safety precautions; comprehend and follow-through with instructions; relate and communicate positively, effectively and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following and enforcing policies; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; collaborate; accept direction; think critically and use good judgment; problem solve and collaborate with licensed care providers as necessary; perform duties with supervision; perform basic math functions; manage multiple patient assignments effectively; organize and prioritize workload; problem solve; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail; distinguish colors as necessary for position; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place and patient care; discern temperature variances through touch; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records and written documents necessary to position, exhibit professional behavior at all times.

Licensures and Certifications: Active California Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) license required. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association required.
