Position Overview
The Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and overhaul of heavy mobile equipment used in Army and Department of Defense logistics operations. This role ensures all vehicles and equipment remain fully mission-capable by conducting preventive maintenance, diagnosing malfunctions, and completing repairs in accordance with technical manuals, safety standards, and organizational procedures.
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul
- Inspect, diagnose, and repair heavy equipment such as bulldozers, graders, cranes, forklifts, loaders, tactical wheeled vehicles, and material-handling systems.
- Perform mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, engine, powertrain, steering, and brake system repairs.
- Conduct Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services (PMCS) and scheduled services per equipment Technical Manuals (TMs).
- Remove and replace engines, transmissions, differentials, hydraulic pumps, and other major components as required.
- Troubleshoot complex faults using diagnostic tools, schematics, and electronic systems.
Technical Documentation & Compliance
- Document all maintenance actions, parts usage, and diagnostics accurately in required systems (e.g., GCSS-Army or equivalent).
- Follow OEM specifications, Army regulations, environmental standards, and OSHA safety procedures.
- Assist in conducting technical inspections to verify equipment serviceability and proper completion of repairs.
- Maintain accountability of tools, equipment, and repair parts in accordance with shop procedures.
Quality Assurance & Safety
- Ensure all maintenance actions meet safety, technical, and quality requirements before equipment is returned to service.
- Comply with hazardous materials handling, waste disposal, and shop safety policies.
- Identify potential issues and recommend improvements to maintenance practices and procedures.
Support & Teamwork
- Coordinate repair priorities with supervisors, production control, and supported units.
- Provide technical assistance to junior mechanics and assist with training as needed.
- Support field operations or recovery missions when required.
Required Qualifications
- Experience performing maintenance on heavy mobile or tactical equipment; equivalent military experience (e.g., 91B, 91L, 91H, 91X) strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, powertrains, and diagnostic procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret Technical Manuals (TMs), schematics, and work instructions.
- Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment.
- Ability to pass physical requirements and maintain applicable certifications.
Preferred Qualifications
- GCSS-Army experience or similar electronic maintenance tracking systems.
- ASE or manufacturer-specific certifications.
- Prior DOD contractor or Army maintenance shop experience.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
- Ability to lift 50 lbs or more.
- Work in shop, field, warehouse, or outdoor environments.
- Frequent standing, bending, climbing, and working in confined spaces.
- Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required.
