Position Overview
The Heavy Equipment Mechanic (Inspector) performs advanced maintenance inspections, diagnostics, and evaluations of heavy tactical and commercial equipment to ensure full compliance with Army technical standards, safety requirements, and performance specifications. This position provides expert-level assessment of equipment conditions, determines serviceability, and recommends repair actions to maintain operational readiness across Army logistics operations.
Key Responsibilities
Inspection & Diagnostic Evaluation
- Conduct detailed technical inspections on heavy equipment such as forklifts, bulldozers, graders, loaders, cranes, tactical wheeled vehicles, and material-handling equipment.
- Evaluate mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, powertrain, brake, and fuel systems to identify deficiencies.
- Perform Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services (PMCS) and validate maintenance performed in accordance with TM, TB, MWO, and Army standards.
- Utilize technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic tools to determine required repairs and verify equipment serviceability.
Maintenance Oversight & Verification
- Inspect completed maintenance actions for compliance with technical standards and contract requirements.
- Verify faults and corrective actions are accurately documented in GCSS-Army or other required maintenance systems.
- Ensure equipment meets safety, operational, and quality assurance standards prior to release for duty.
- Recommend repair priorities and assist maintenance personnel with troubleshooting complex faults.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Support Quality Control/Quality Assurance programs by performing inspections and audits of maintenance activities.
- Ensure compliance with Army regulations, OSHA safety rules, environmental guidelines, and organizational SOPs.
- Identify trends in equipment failures and provide recommendations for process improvements.
- Maintain accurate inspection records, fault listings, and required reports.
Technical Expertise & Training
- Provide guidance and technical assistance to mechanics and maintenance teams.
- Train personnel on inspection procedures, safety checks, and use of diagnostic equipment.
- Assist in developing inspection checklists and maintenance documentation processes.
Required Qualifications
- Prior experience as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Maintenance Inspector, or equivalent military MOS (e.g., 91B, 91L, 91H, 91X).
- Strong knowledge of heavy equipment systems including hydraulics, powertrains, braking systems, electrical systems, and diesel engines.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and maintenance documentation.
- Proficiency with inspection and diagnostic tools.
- Ability to obtain and maintain required certifications and clearances.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to ensure compliance with technical and safety standards.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in DOD or contractor maintenance operations.
- GCSS-Army or equivalent maintenance system experience.
- ASE or manufacturer-specific certifications for heavy equipment or diesel systems.
- Previous experience in quality assurance/inspection roles.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs routinely.
- Work in outdoor, shop, field, or tactical environments with varying conditions.
- May require extended standing, bending, climbing, or working in confined spaces.
- Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required.
