Position Overview
The Ground Support Equipment Mechanic performs maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and overhaul of powered and non-powered ground support equipment used in aviation and logistics operations. This role ensures the safe, reliable, and mission-ready condition of equipment supporting aircraft maintenance, cargo operations, and flight line activities.
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul
- Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair a wide range of GSE including:
- Aircraft tow tractors and tugs
- Aerospace ground power units (GPUs)
- Air conditioning and heating units
- Hydraulic test stands
- Fuel service equipment
- Nitrogen/oxygen carts
- Maintenance stands and platforms
- Perform diagnostics and repairs on mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, fuel, and cooling systems.
- Conduct Preventive Maintenance (PM) per Technical Orders (T.O.s), Technical Manuals (TMs), OEM documentation, and service bulletins.
- Replace or rebuild engines, transmissions, pumps, motors, hoses, fittings, valves, and related components.
- Perform operational checks and functional testing after repairs.
Technical Documentation & Compliance
- Record maintenance actions, inspections, and parts usage in required systems (e.g., MAXIMO, GCSS-Army, NALCOMIS, or contract-specified software).
- Interpret and apply technical data, schematics, blueprints, and wiring diagrams.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOD, and organizational maintenance and environmental standards.
- Maintain accountability of tools, test equipment, and repair parts.
Quality Assurance & Safety
- Ensure all maintenance meets safety, technical, and quality control requirements.
- Follow proper procedures for handling hazardous materials, fluids, refrigerants, and waste products.
- Maintain clean and safe work areas and adhere to flight line and shop safety regulations.
- Identify recurring equipment issues and recommend process improvements.
Collaboration & Support
- Coordinate repair priorities with supervisors, production control, and flight line personnel.
- Provide assistance to other mechanics and support team training as required.
- Support field or remote-site equipment operations when needed.
Required Qualifications
- Experience maintaining aviation or military ground support equipment.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and fuel systems.
- Ability to diagnose equipment faults using technical manuals and test equipment.
- Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic instrumentation.
- Ability to read and interpret T.O.s, TMs, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Must meet physical requirements and be able to work in shop or outdoor environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior military experience (e.g., USAF AGE, Army GSE, Navy flight line support).
- Experience with maintenance tracking systems such as MAXIMO, GCSS-Army, or NALCOMIS.
- HVAC certification (EPA Section 608) for equipment that utilizes refrigerants.
- OEM or technical school training in diesel, hydraulics, or electrical systems.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
- Lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks including climbing, kneeling, and extended standing.
- Work in indoor/outdoor environments, including extreme temperatures.
- Required use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
