Summary:  The Program Director will provide visionary leadership and administrative oversight for the initiation, development, implementation, and accreditation of a new CACREP counseling graduate program. This position includes expertise in curriculum design, assessment, and compliance with Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) standards, coordinates faculty and resources, and collaborates with institutional leadership to establish a sustainable, high-quality counselor education program.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

  • Lead planning, design, and launch of a new CACREP counseling program, including development of mission, goals, and outcomes aligned with institutional strategy and the profession.
  • Develop all program curriculum (foundational and specialized practice areas), syllabi, assessments, and learning outcomes mapped explicitly to current CACREP standards.
  • Oversee preparation of documentation and submissions for CACREP accreditation, including self-study reports, assessment data, rubrics, and program materials required for initial site review and ongoing compliance.
  • Coordinate internal and external review processes to ensure readiness for CACREP site visits.
  • Recruit, mentor, and evaluate faculty teaching in the program; coordinate course assignments and ensure faculty credentials meet CACREP requirements.
  • Provide leadership for the continuous review and improvement of curriculum, including coordinating faculty meetings, curricular committees, and assessment review.
  • Ensure consistency and quality in course delivery across modalities (in-person, online, hybrid) where applicable.
  • Cultivate a learning-centered environment through faculty evaluation and development that supports engaging classroom experiences, scholarly activity, and service aligned with institutional mission and student learning outcomes.
  • Establish and maintain a robust program assessment plan that systematically collects and analyzes data on student learning, program outcomes, field experiences, and key performance indicators for accreditation.
  • Use assessment data to refine curriculum, improve learning experiences, and meet CACREP continuous improvement expectations.
  • Prepare required annual reports, accreditation updates, and supporting documentation for institutional and external stakeholders.
  • Advise and mentor students on academic progression, practicum and internship placements, and professional development opportunities.
  • Ensure that practicum and internship opportunities comply with CACREP expectations for supervised field experiences.
  • Promote student engagement with professional organizations and events.
  • Collaborate with the Dean, academic leaders, and administrative units to secure resources, budget planning, and operational support for the program.
  • Serve as program representative to campus committees, advisory boards, community partners, and professional organizations.
  • Assist with recruitment and retention efforts, advisement, evaluation, and external partnerships to grow and sustain the program.  and general education offerings as appropriate.

 

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assumes additional responsibilities, performs special projects, and assists with other duties as needed or requested.

  • **The Program Director maintains a limited teaching role to ensure curricular coherence and direct engagement with students while prioritizing administrative and accreditation responsibilities (3 credits annually).
  • **Performance will be assessed based on successful development and launch of the counseling program, readiness for CACREP accreditation site visit, achievement of curriculum milestones, and effective program assessment and faculty development in the first 12–24 months.
Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education, Training, and Experience:

  • Doctoral degree (e.g., Ph.D., Ed.D.) in Counselor Education and Supervision, Counseling from a CACREP-accredited program.
  • Demonstrated expertise in counseling education, curriculum design, and assessment aligned with CACREP standards.
  • Experience with higher education leadership, accreditation processes, and faculty coordination.
  • Holds current licensure as a professional counselor (e.g., LPC, LPCC, LMHC, or state-equivalent) or is license-eligible in the state where the institution is located.
  • Demonstrated qualifications to provide and oversee clinical supervision consistent with CACREP standards and applicable state licensure regulations, including coursework and supervised experience in counseling supervision.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior experience launching or leading academic programs through initial accreditation.
  • Strong record of teaching, scholarship, and service in counseling or related fields.

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics:

  • Consistently utilize effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain mental concentration for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to perform multiple duties in addition to departmental responsibilities with frequent interruptions and time pressures.
  • Possess the ability to tolerate and implement changes.
  • Ability to perform and function in a manner consistent with mentoring faculty and students.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

 

  • The nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment.
  • Requires the ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile, and prepare work documents, and set up and maintain work files.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

  • Work is performed in a general office environment.
