EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
This is a position requiring skill in the operation of various types of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicular equipment and construction and maintenance equipment. Additionally, this position requires the performance of various labor-intensive duties/tasks relative to the successful completion of all public works related activities. Work is assigned with general instructions on a project basis; it is expected that the employee can and will proceed independently in the carrying out of the assignment without further instruction. Work also includes some light and/or heavy physical labor and/or maintenance and repair activity when equipment is not being operated.
An employee holding this position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the equipment being used. Work involves both outdoor and indoor conditions that may vary and therefore, only be partially controlled. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Public Works Director or his/her designee.
Following are examples of activities that are typically undertaken by an Equipment Operator. The list of duties contained herein is not meant to be all-inclusive; rather it is a list that helps identify many of the regular functions performed by an Equipment Operator.
Operate dump trucks, front end loaders, rollers, street sweepers, snowplows, garbage trucks, flush trucks, leaf vacs, backhoes, and other similar equipment.
Haul blacktop, stone, garbage/refuse debris, earth or other lose materials for construction or clean-up purposes.
Dig street cuts, ditches, and trenches; spread salt and antiskid on roadways; help load and unload vehicles and trailers.
Perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance work on equipment; assist mechanics in making major repairs to equipment; maintain equipment records.
Service equipment with gas, oil, water; take routine corrective measures if malfunction occurs.
Perform manual work on assigned projects when not operating equipment; perform all other related work as required.
Perform any other duties as directed by the Board of Supervisors, Manager, Public Works Director, Superintendent/Foreman, or other management personnel.

Thorough knowledge of the practices applied to the care and safe operation of heavy equipment.
Knowledge of all applicable state laws pertaining to the operation of vehicles on all roadways within the Township.
Knowledge of the component parts of automotive vehicles and/or equipment and the functions of each.
Ability to service, make running adjustments and minor repairs to the equipment.
Skill in operation of assigned equipment, including a single chassis truck or equipment of equal complexity, on or off the highway, in traffic and under adverse climatic conditions.
Ability to carry out all other assignments in adverse weather conditions.
Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions, read and interpret drawings, and to perform related record keeping and filing tasks.
Ability to perform manual labor for a prolonged period such as shoveling, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and throwing items of various weight. General knowledge of carpentry, plumbing and electrical systems so to be able to perform routine maintenance on Township buildings.
Two years experience in the operation of heavy trucks, construction and/or maintenance equipment. Plowing experience helpful. High School Diploma or equivalent. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license, CDL Class A. Equivalent combination of training and experience.
Pennsylvania Commercial Driver’s License Certification Class A and Tanker Endorsement within one year required of all applicants with continuing periodic drug and alcohol tests.
Residency within Blair County is required.
