Responsibilities and Duties
- Provide primary medical care to patients of the state hospital during scheduled clinics, rounds, unscheduled visits, and after-hours on-call coverage
- Perform initial (within 24 hours of admission) and yearly physical examinations for extended care patients
- Evaluate and treat patients with complex medical and psychiatric problems
- Offer medical consultation to attending psychiatrists and nursing staff
- Complete documentation, reports, and evaluations in compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards
- Provide medical clinic leadership under the direction of the Medical Director
- Consult with internal and external professionals, including physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, and attorneys
- Participate in hospital committees and treatment team functions as assigned
- Contribute to continuing education and training programs for staff
- Maintain liaison communication with community physicians, mental health professionals, and drug/alcohol programs
