What are the responsibilities and job description for the Bridge Inspection Team Leader position at Lochner?
We are seeking a motivated and experienced Bridge Inspection Team Leader to support bridge inspection and transportation infrastructure projects throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The ideal candidate will have experience performing bridge inspections in accordance with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT), and the Specifications for the National Bridge Inventory (SNBI) requirements.

Your Impact
- Perform routine, in-depth, fracture-critical, and special bridge inspections in accordance with SNBI.
- Plan and execute bridge inspections.
- Conduct field assessments of bridge components, including superstructure, substructure, bearings, decks, joints, and ancillary structures.
- Document structural deficiencies, deterioration, and maintenance needs using field notes, photographs, sketches, and inspection software.
- Prepare bridge inspection reports and condition assessments.
- Review existing bridge plans, prior inspection reports, and load rating information prior to inspections.
- Utilize access equipment such as ladders, under-bridge inspection units, lifts, boats, or rope access systems as required.
- Coordinate traffic control and safety procedures.
- Support structural evaluations, emergency response inspections, and asset management tasks as needed.
- Maintain compliance with OSHA safety regulations and company safety policies.
- Collaborate with engineers, contractors, municipalities, and state agency personnel on project deliverables.
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, or related field.
- Minimum 4-7 years of bridge inspection or related structural inspection experience.
- Experience working on MassDOT or RIDOT bridge inspection projects.
- Familiarity with SNBI requirements and FHWA inspection procedures.
- Completion of FHWA/NHI Bridge Inspection Training Course.
- Experience preparing inspection reports and documenting bridge conditions.
- Ability to read and interpret structural drawings and engineering plans.
- Physically capable of performing work at heights, work at night, carrying ladders and equipment, and working in adverse weather conditions.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license with ability to travel throughout Massachusetts and surrounding New England states as needed.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
- Professional Engineer (PE) or PE-Eligibility a plus.
- Experience with tunnel or ancillary structure inspections is a plus.
- Familiarity with inspection software and asset management systems.
- Rope access, confined space, or OSHA safety certifications are a plus.
- Experience performing bridge load ratings is a plus.
- Experience operating inspection equipment and coordinating lane closures or police details.
