Position Overview
- Location: Jackson, Mississippi – Onsite 5 Days Per Week

- Compensation: $90,000 – $95,000 per year

Our client is seeking an experienced COBOL Programmer with a strong EDI background to join their healthcare/insurance technology team on a full-time, onsite basis in Jackson, Mississippi. This role focuses on supporting and enhancing COBOL-written claims processing systems running on IBM Mainframe, ensuring accuracy, reliability, and compliance within a highly regulated healthcare environment.
What You Will Do
- Develop, maintain, and enhance COBOL-based claims processing applications on IBM Mainframe
- Support and troubleshoot EDI transactions including HIPAA X12 5010 transaction sets (834, 837, 277, 999, 270, 276)
- Perform analysis of new and existing Mainframe application systems to assess the impact of proposed modifications, including input/output requirements and information flow
- Design and execute documentation, testing, debugging, and support processes in accordance with departmental policy
- Write and maintain detailed system specifications and participate in unit testing
- Manage planned and unplanned maintenance of internally developed applications
- Implement IT controls to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of application data
- Work with MFT platforms (GoAnywhere, Sterling, Axway, or MoveIT) to manage secure file transfers
Required Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience)
Experience:
- 5 years of COBOL design and development experience in a Mainframe environment
- 5 years working with CICS and DB2
- Healthcare or insurance industry experience is required
- Hands-on experience with EDI – HIPAA X12 5010 (834, 837, 277, 999, 270, 276)
Technical Skills:
- COBOL and JCL development on IBM Mainframe
- MFT platform experience (GoAnywhere, Sterling, Axway, or MoveIT)
- FTP, SFTP, and FTP over SSL
- PGP encryption concepts
- Understanding of software testing levels, release procedures, and change management
Soft Skills:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; able to work effectively with customers, developers, and management
- Ability to work both collaboratively in a team and independently
- Works well under pressure with strong attention to detail and ability to meet tight deadlines
Preferred / Nice-to-Have Skills
- C programming experience in a Linux environment
- IBM WebSphere Application Server (WAS)
- Java (J2EE, multithreaded programming, JMS, JUnit)
- Spring Framework (Core, Boot, Batch, Data, REST)
- RESTful or SOAP Web Services
- XML technologies: XSD, XPath, XSLT
- Agile/Scrum methodology
- Atlassian Jira and Confluence
Important Requirements
- This is a fully onsite position – candidates must be able to work in Jackson, Mississippi 5 days per week
