CNA/Instructional Assistant - Special Education (LMS)

JOB SUMMARY:

To assist the school staff in the development and implementation of a safe, comfortable, efficient, and motivating educational environment for students in an inclusion classroom setting. 

Qualifications & Requirements:

• Must meet minimum requirements for instructional support services personnel with 48 college credits OR a passing score on the Paraprofessional exam with a score of at least 455.
• Demonstrates the ability to work cooperatively with others. 
• Is skilled in creating and maintaining a wholesome relationship with children.
• Articulate and accurate in the use of written and spoken language. 
• Has good human relations and communication skills.
• Ability to use a computer.

• Must possess a valid Maryland Certified Nursing Assistant certification.

• Must be a Certified Medication Technician with the Maryland Board of Nursing or be willing to participate and successfully complete the twenty-hour Medication Technician training program.

• Must hold a current certification in CPR and First Aid.

• Must be physically capable of assisting students with special needs which often involves lifting, positioning, pushing, and aiding in bodily functions as needed.

• Must be willing and able to maintain confidentiality of health information.

• Demonstrates keyboarding and clerical skills.

• Must have the ability to exercise good judgment in dealing with students, parents, administrators, school staff and the general public.  Experience in a school setting and/or working with children is desired.

• Must be willing to carry out policies and procedures concerning the management of communicable diseases both personally and professionally. 

Performance Responsibilities:

• Performs general instructional-related duties, including duplicating materials, preparing materials, and working with students to enrich or reinforce instruction.
• Works under the direct supervision of and in close proximity with a highly qualified teacher.
• Assists the teacher and other professionals through general supervision of students.
• Maintains required records and corrects tests and homework papers when appropriate. 
• Provides instruction to students in accordance with the teacher's plans and instructions in individual, small group, or whole group settings to help students accomplish goals and objectives included in the Individualized Education Program (IEP). 
• Promotes goodwill, understanding, and acceptance of the county's programs and actions.
• Assists the school nurse in meeting the health needs of the students through the following:
•  Collects and reports routine student data as specified by the school nurse.
• Recognizes and reports alterations in student conditions or behaviors.
• Gives minor first aid to the sick and injured.
• Assists with toileting activities, positioning, lifting, and feeding of students with special needs as necessary.
• Provides the school nurse with feedback regarding the student’s plan of care.
• Provides interventions as delegated by the school nurse.
• Records objective data and care provided to the students on appropriate documents.
• Adheres to local, state, and federal guidelines and regulations regarding confidentiality and privacy rights, and directs all requests for information to the school nurse.
• Reinforces health education provided by the school nurse.
• Reports the students’ response to the teaching.
• Delegable Nursing Services: These listed services may be delegated to the health assistant under the supervision of the school nurse. The list is not all-inclusive and a specific task is only delegated for a specific student; therefore, a procedure that is delegable for one student may not necessarily be delegable for any other student.
• Oral medication administration which does not require calculation of the dose
• Pharmacy- or prescriber-prepared handheld inhalant medication administration
• Routine/non-complex/predictable gastrostomy-device feedings
• Clean, intermittent/non-complex bladder catheterization
• Monitoring of vital signs 
• Positioning
• Student-specific emergency medications (e.g., EpiPen)
• Oropharyngeal suctioning
• Assembly of supplies and supervision of student finger stick for blood glucose
• Medication by metered-dose inhaler, nebulizer, and oxygen by nasal cannula or mask
• Medication by subcutaneous injection if the nurse has calculated the dose
• Performs other duties that may be assigned.

Salary: Based on experience and training according to the pay scale for Instructional Assistant II personnel.  This position is on Support Services 1 on Lane B. This position is a full-time, 7-hour-a-day position with full-time benefits.
