POSITION SUMMARY

 

Homebound/hospitalized service is a self-study program designed to help pupils who are unable to attend school temporarily due to a medical condition, to keep up with their studies and to progress as far as possible given their medical condition.  The homebound/hospitalized teacher carries assignments from school to the home or treatment facility to enable pupils to continue their studies.  Scheduled as needed.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Delivers instructional services to students who are homebound and hospitalized and coordinates these services with teachers from each student’s operating district.
  • Receives textbooks, assignments, and other teaching support materials from the student’s school and delivers these materials to the assigned students.
  • Meets with assigned students on a regular basis consisting of a minimum of two 45-minute nonconsecutive sessions of instruction per week.
  • Maintains appropriate records to track assignments and shares this information with operating district representatives.
  • Develops student progress reports in the assigned area(s).
  • Participates in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings when appropriate.
  • Develops a working relationship with each student’s parent(s)/guardian(s) in assigned area of responsibility.
  • Drives to and from district sites, students' homes and other locations to provide services.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

 

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Valid Michigan teacher certificate.
  • Approval in at least one area of special education preferred.
  • Demonstrated successful student teaching experience required.
    • Student teaching experience in special education in a specific area of impairment preferred.
    • Three years successful teaching experience in major area of endorsement preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach assigned students at various age levels.
  • Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and communicate with parents/guardians.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with students with a variety of disabilities and successfully deliver instructional components within the curriculum guidelines.
  • Demonstrated mental/physical ability and stamina for meeting the requirements of the position.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule and to travel to and from LESA, constituent school districts, students' homes and other agencies.
  • Exercise good judgment and make decisions in accordance with board policies and established procedures.

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate. 
  • Approval in at least one area of special education preferred.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit use hands to finger, handle, or feel; talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and is a standard acceptable level for this environment. Is directly responsibility for student safety, work output and well-being.

The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment.
