Adult Services Supervisor (40 hours per week)

LOCATION: Bull Street Library-2002 Bull Street Savannah, GA 31401

FLSA: Exempt

REPORTS TO: Senior Library Manager

SALARY GRADE: (114) $52,145.60 annually

 

J OB SUMMARY

      Under general supervision of the Branch Manager, the Adult Services Supervisor is responsible for reference and reader’s advisory for the adult area; prepares and presents technology classes; assists with collection maintenance and programming; manages the day-too-day activity of adult services in the branch; creates and executes special events, displays, and provides customer service to all age groups.  

      This position promotes library services and partnerships within the local community.  Supervises adult services staff as applicable.  

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Position Duties and Responsibilities

Performs excellent internal and external customer service and library service in response to the information needs of library users and the

overall community. 

Promotes library collections and services to the public, both inside and outside the physical building through knowledge of library

resources such as catalogs, search systems, databases, and the internet. 

Plans, designs, promotes, presents, and evaluates library programs for adult patrons. 

Assists customers with the use of print and electronic resources. 

Recommends and refers patrons and parents to alternative sources of information (internal and external). 

Creates and arranges displays of books and other library materials to enhance the library experience and to promote the use of library

resources. Assists in maintaining a pleasant, inviting, and safe environment for all patrons. 

Works independently to analyze and evaluate current services, programs, and practices; revises and develops programs as needed to

respond to patron needs and service delivery. 

Performs reader’s advisory service for adult patrons. Assists in use of the library and its resources. Assists adults

in selection of appropriate material. 

In coordination with Outreach, may provide outreach to adults by visiting local community centers, senior facilities, and attending events

to promote library services or programs.   

With guidance from the Branch Library Manager, provides response(s) to requests and conflict resolution upon receiving complaints

and/or special requests from patrons. 

Assists with applying for and utilizing grant money for adult services, as approved. 

Plans and/or prepares displays, bibliographies, pathfinders, and other informational materials. 

Participates in staff development and training. 

Oversees adult services staff (as applicable). 

Acts as person in charge in the absence of the manager. 

Analyzes library collection and assists in its development, maintenance and preservation. 

Performs other related duties as assigned. 

Qualifications:

 

Requires a master’s degree in library and information science or related field; two (2) years of library or related experience (e.g., teaching, recreation, social work, non-profit work, etc.); or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Requirements:

Experience with the PINES system is a plus. 

Must have previous supervisory and/or experience leading a small group of personnel. 

Licenses or Certifications:

Valid driver’s license and insurability required.

Special Requirements:

Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends and various locations.

  • Knowledge of reference sources and research techniques, reader interest level; methods of library supply resources, principles and methods of Library Services automated systems.  
  • Excellent planning and communication skills. 
  • Excellent presentation skills. 
  • Ability to work with people of varied backgrounds, ages and abilities. 
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends and various locations. 
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment and a variety of audio-visual equipment. 
  • Computer skills including the use of Microsoft Office and experience using computer software to create flyers and brochures. Prior experience with MS Office is a plus. 
  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reason accommodation, enable the employee to communicate effectively.  
  • Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, to enable the employee to review a wide variety of materials in electronic or hard copy form.  
  • Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, to enable the employee to operate personal computers, telephone and related equipment.  
  • Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, to enable the employee to function within a general library environment.

  • Ability to maintain a calm atmosphere, assures safety, and responds to emergencies. 
  • Ability to deal with associates and the public in a courteous manner, ability to communicate well with individuals; neat personal appearance; emotionally stable; pleasing manner.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is typically performed with the employee sitting at a desk, standing for extended periods, or bending/stooping. The employee must be able to lift and carry up to 10 pounds routinely, climb ladders, climb stairs, stand for extended periods of time, extended walking within and outside branch locations, reach, bend, and stoop. Full range of hand and finger motion is required for data entry purposes. The ability to distinguish color is required for network wiring purposes. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or

crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.

  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like,

using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.

  • Manual Dexterity: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with  fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  • Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without  correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make sound decisions.
  • Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees
  • Speaking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.
  • Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to  a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Visual Acuity 1: Have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and  analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading. Must have the ability to see well enough to interpret data on a computer monitor.
  • Visual Acuity 3: Visual Acuity determines the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of  the work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Typical office/library environment. Some fluctuations in building temperature related to HVAC problems can cause uncomfortable periods of heat or cold. Some periods of elevated noise levels. Some stress related to the type of work being performed may be encountered e.g., pressure related to periods of high-volume activity and multiple demands.

The work week is a 40-hour work week. After hours and holiday availability, while rare, may be required.
