Overview
The Volunteer & Education Coordinator is responsible for developing and maintaining Little Traverse Bay Humane Society's volunteer and community education programs. This position recruits, trains, and supports volunteers while expanding community engagement through humane education, youth programming, and outreach initiatives that inspire compassion for animals and strengthen community relationships.
This is a full-time position, approximately 40 hours per week. Evening, weekend, and holiday hours may be required for events and volunteer activities.
Responsibilities
- Oversees all aspects of the volunteer program, including recruitment, onboarding, orientation, scheduling, training, recognition, retention, and ongoing communication.
- Manages volunteer software and records, ensuring accurate tracking of volunteer hours, training, and participation.
- Coordinates the community service program, including interviews, scheduling, training, supervision, and documentation of required service hours.
- Plans, coordinates, and facilitates humane education programming, including school visits, scout groups, library programs, summer camps, shelter tours, and educational presentations.
- Oversees youth engagement programs including Reading Buddies, Creative Kids & Pets, ANGEL, and other educational initiatives.
- Represents LTBHS at community outreach events, educational opportunities, and public engagement activities.
- Cultivates relationships with schools, civic organizations, youth groups, and community partners to expand educational opportunities.
- Assists with community events and fundraising initiatives by recruiting volunteers, coordinating volunteer staffing, and supporting event execution.
- Maintains shelter databases, volunteer records, and other software systems as needed.
- Provides exceptional customer service while communicating professionally with volunteers, staff, and members of the public.
- Collaborates across departments to identify volunteer needs and develop meaningful engagement opportunities.
- Works in accordance with department SOPs.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- Experience coordinating volunteers, education programs, customer service, or nonprofit programming preferred.
- Ability to recruit, motivate, and retain volunteers from diverse backgrounds.
- Comfortable speaking to groups of children and adults.
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office; experience with volunteer management software preferred.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across
- departments.
- Passion for animal welfare and the mission of Little Traverse Bay Humane
- Society.
- First Aid Certified and APHE Member (or willingness to get certified)
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and lift up to 50 pounds.
Pay: $16.00 - $18.00 per hour
