About Little Red Nursery

Little Red Nursery is an independent, family-owned retail garden center and production greenhouse located in Lubbock, Texas. With two retail locations and more than eight acres of greenhouse production, we grow a diverse selection of annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables, lavender, shrubs, trees, and specialty crops for gardeners across West Texas.

Unlike many commercial greenhouse operations, we combine large-scale plant production with a thriving retail garden center. Our customers don’t simply purchase plants—they come to us for education, inspiration, and trusted advice. The Opportunity

We’re looking for an experienced Head Grower who wants more than simply maintaining crops.

We want someone excited to build systems, improve production, mentor employees, introduce new ideas, and help shape the future of our greenhouse operation.

This position oversees every aspect of greenhouse production—from propagation through finished sale—while continually improving crop quality, environmental control, irrigation, fertility, integrated pest management, and production efficiency.

Because Little Red Nursery is also a retail destination, this role extends beyond the greenhouse. Our Head Grower serves as a bridge between production and our customers by supporting the retail team, answering horticultural questions, assisting with educational events, and sharing a passion for plants with our community.

Primary Responsibilities

Crop Production

* Develop and execute annual production schedules.

* Oversee propagation, transplanting, spacing, finishing, and crop timing.

* Produce exceptional quality plants while minimizing shrink.

* Monitor crop quality daily and make timely production decisions.

* Develop production strategies for annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables, lavender, shrubs, trees, and specialty crops.

Greenhouse Environmental Management

* Manage greenhouse climate including heating, cooling, ventilation, shade systems, supplemental lighting, humidity, and environmental controls.

* Optimize growing conditions for maximum plant quality and production efficiency.

* Assist with implementation of new greenhouse technologies and automation.

Irrigation & Fertility

* Develop irrigation strategies that maximize plant quality while conserving water.

* Manage fertigation systems, Dosatrons, acid injection, and fertility programs.

* Troubleshoot irrigation systems and train employees to maintain them properly.

* Continuously improve water management systems throughout the greenhouse.

Integrated Pest Management

* Lead our IPM program.

* Scout crops daily for insects, diseases, weeds, and nutritional deficiencies.

* Develop integrated biological, cultural, and chemical control strategies.

* Maintain pesticide records and regulatory compliance.

Production Leadership

* Lead and mentor greenhouse employees.

* Develop Standard Operating Procedures.

* Train employees to become stronger growers and better problem solvers.

* Foster accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

Retail & Customer Engagement

* Serve as a horticultural resource for our retail staff and customers.

* Assist customers with plant selection and troubleshooting when needed.

* Participate in educational workshops, special events, and community outreach.

* Help train retail staff on plant care, new crops, and seasonal best practices.

* Collaborate on merchandising and introducing exciting new plant offerings.

* Help tell the story behind how our plants are grown and why they perform so well in West Texas.

Projects You’ll Help Lead

This isn’t simply a maintenance position.

You’ll help lead projects including:

* Greenhouse automation

* Environmental control improvements

* High-pressure fogging systems

* Irrigation and fertigation optimization

* Water quality improvements

* Supplemental lighting programs

* Crop trials and new variety evaluations

* Production workflow improvements

* Greenhouse expansion planning

* Development of future production leaders

Qualifications

Preferred candidates will have:

* Five or more years of commercial greenhouse growing experience.

* Strong knowledge of greenhouse crop production.

* Experience with environmental control systems.

* Irrigation and fertigation management experience.

* Strong understanding of plant nutrition.

* Integrated Pest Management experience.

* Leadership experience supervising production employees.

* Excellent organizational and communication skills.

* A passion for learning and continuous improvement.

Experience with greenhouse automation, climate computers, supplemental lighting, propagation, and retail garden centers is highly desirable.
