General Job Description: Works independently or with others to perform a variety of shop tasks related to the maintenance and repair of commercial diesel trucks and trailers including diagnostics, inspection, adjustment, replacement, and repair of all components of these vehicles as well as directing the safety program for the shop. Must have sufficient experience or training to work with little of no supervision.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
- Diagnose and replace or rebuild engines and transmissions and or parts
- Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other important parts to ensure that they are in proper operating condition.
- Examine and adjust protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices.
- Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment and machinery.
- Test drive vehicles to diagnose or to ensure that they are working proper
- Advises management on problem correction.
- Perform any other duties as assigned.
- Perform Truck/Trailer PM and Calendar servicing including fluid/filter changes, lubrication, brake system inspection and replacement, multi point vehicle inspection.
- Perform all aspects of Truck/Trailer repair work including the diagnostic inspection, repair and or replacement of all major vehicle components and systems.
- Review and address driver complaints and or issues related to their equipment.
- Complete and maintain accurate service records for all work performed.
- Perform Electrical system repairs and Cooling System maintenance
- Maintain a clean and organized Shop
Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. - Must have and maintain a current driver’s license.
- Minimum of five (5) years' experience in maintenance / repair for diesel trucks and other shop related repairs; Troubleshooting skills and experience running preventative maintenance program.
- Valid Class A CDL to drive test drive diesel trucks and drive to job sites.
- Proficient computer skills and experience in record keeping in order to input data into the maintenance system.
- Must have a strong working knowledge of the safe and proper use of a variety of tools including hand tools, measuring tools and devises, floor jacks, drills and drill presses, powered hydraulic presses, power tools including pneumatic tools such as impact wrenches, grinders and cutting tools.
- Must have a strong working knowledge of commonly acceptable practices and techniques related to the inspection, adjustment, replacement and repair of equipment. - Must have at least 2 years working experience in a commercial truck / trailer repair shop environment as a fleet mechanic 1 or equivalent.
- Must have a strong working knowledge of common practices and techniques for diagnostic testing of all systems related to commercial fleet equipment including air, hydraulic, fuel and electrical systems.
- Must be able to read and understand system schematic drawings.
- Vocational or Technical certification preferred
- Must have a Positive attitude and willingness to grow in position
- Willingness to travel within district (close geographical area), work the required schedule; show up on time and on a reliable basis.
- Possess own tools to perform work on all systems on diesel equipment
- Knowledge on A/C system, brake system, emission systems, air systems and diagnostics / trouble shooting of diesel engines
- Strong mechanical and troubleshooting aptitude
- Ability to perform job responsibilities without direct supervision as necessary
