School-Age Child Care Assistant

Little Glad Early Childhood Center – Fowlerville Community Schools

Position Summary

Little Glad Early Childhood Center is seeking caring, energetic, and dependable individuals to work with school-age children (Grades K–5) in our before- and after-school child care program, as well as our summer program. Staff members supervise children, build positive relationships, and plan and participate in engaging, age-appropriate activities that promote learning, creativity, and fun.

Work Schedule

School Year

Monday–Friday

  • 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.
  • 3:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Additional hours may be available during the school day by assisting in preschool classrooms with lunch coverage, staff breaks, and other support needs.

Summer Program

Monday–Friday

  • Approximately 7.5-hour shifts scheduled between 7:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The duties listed below are intended to describe the general nature of the work performed and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of responsibilities.

  • Provide a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment for school-age children.
  • Supervise children during indoor and outdoor activities, ensuring their health, safety, and well-being.
  • Plan, organize, and participate in age-appropriate recreational, educational, and enrichment activities.
  • Foster children's physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development through positive interactions and meaningful experiences.
  • Assist with lesson planning, activity preparation, classroom setup, and organization.
  • Support children with varying developmental needs by adapting activities as appropriate.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming program environment.
  • Enforce classroom, playground, and program expectations using positive behavior supports, redirection, and effective communication.
  • Build positive relationships with children and families, greeting them daily and communicating professionally regarding children's needs and activities.
  • Assist with attendance, documentation, and other program records as assigned.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of child development and implement developmentally appropriate practices.
  • Work collaboratively with program staff to ensure high-quality care and programming.
  • Maintain appropriate child care licensing ratios and be willing to work in different classrooms or program areas as staffing needs require.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to work effectively with children and adults.
  • Basic computer and technology skills.
  • Ability to obtain any required child care licensing clearances and trainings.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with children in a school, child care, camp, recreation, or related setting.
  • Coursework or degree in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Child Development, Recreation, or a related field.
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).

Physical Requirements

To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Regularly stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and actively engage with children.
  • Frequently use hands for classroom and activity materials.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
  • Supervise children both indoors and outdoors for extended periods.
  • Possess sufficient vision, hearing, and communication abilities to safely supervise children and respond to emergencies.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with children, families, and coworkers.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and sound judgment.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise school-age children in accordance with district policies and state child care licensing requirements.
  • Ensure children are appropriately supervised during transitions, activities, meals, outdoor play, and program operations.
