Literacy Connections is a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing and offering programs and services to support a literate society. We recruit and train volunteers to provide student-centered tutoring primarily for adults and programs for children and families that promote independence and enrichment through literacy. Literacy Connections envisions a society where everyone can read, write, and reach their potential.

We are seeking a part-time Program Coordinator for our adult literacy program in Orange County. The successful candidate will be an initiative-taker with strong interpersonal, written, and communications skills who can lead, develop, and expand the program by actively identifying and recruiting potential students and volunteer tutors.

The position has flexible hours and generous paid vacation, holiday, sick, and personal leave time. It requires 21-24 hours per week at a pay rate of $20-22 per hour.

JOB DESCRIPTION

To actively identify and recruit potential students and tutors for the program. Guide volunteers through the tutor training process, match tutors and students, and provide support and instructional resources for lesson planning and active learning engagement. The coordinator will seek and partner with community stakeholders and organizations to pursue the development and expansion of the program and provide tutor resources and students with a path to success. The Program Coordinator reports to the Executive Director of Literacy Connections of the Hudson Valley, Inc.

Essential Functions:

· The primary focus and goal are to pursue the development and expansion of the adult literacy program in the service area.

· Conduct the general intake operation, evaluation, matching, and support services of learners and volunteers. Oversee all one-to-one matches, ESL classes, and/or drop-in centers in the service area.

· Maintains the permanent files of all learners and volunteers assigned to the service area per the agency's policies and procedures and keeps the internal database/files updated.

· Understands ASISTS and attends training and other staff development as required by NYSED/RAEN.

· Maintains contact with student and tutor teams, providing support and guidance as needed.

· Establishes and maintains partnerships with other service agencies and community stakeholders, encouraging inter-agency collaborations and referrals. Submits monthly staff reports and other program reports as needed for funders. Supports the agency’s fundraising efforts, events, and projects; contributes to the organization's newsletter.

· Additional tasks as needed for program success and growth.

Qualifications

· College degree required and/or four years of nonprofit/education-related experience.

· Demonstrated ability to manage volunteers and effectively work with people. Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.

· Computer knowledge, including Word, Excel, Publisher, and database management.

· Sensitivity to working with people with special needs and from varying backgrounds.

· An initiative-taker with the flexibility to work remotely and in office settings with a team.

· The ability to work independently, follow through, and take initiative is essential. Must be able to travel to and from literacy learning sites throughout Orange County and other conferences and development meetings.

· Must have a valid driver's license and a reliable car.

· Fluent / bilingual in Spanish preferred but not required.
