The Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA) works under the supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist to provide direct treatment and care to patients. The COTA helps patients improve their ability to perform daily activities and achieve a higher level of independence. This role involves implementing treatment plans, documenting progress, and collaborating with healthcare professionals to ensure the highest level of patient care.
Key Responsibilities:

Patient Care and Treatment:
- Assist in the implementation of treatment plans designed by the Occupational Therapist to help patients achieve their functional goals.
- Conduct therapeutic activities, exercises, and interventions that promote the physical, cognitive, and emotional well-being of patients.
- Assist patients in improving their ability to perform tasks in their daily lives, such as dressing, grooming, and mobility.
- Adapt activities and environments to meet individual patient needs and challenges.

Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with the Occupational Therapist, nurses, and other healthcare staff to provide coordinated care to patients.
- Communicate regularly with the Occupational Therapist regarding patient progress, any concerns, and adjustments needed in the treatment plan.
- Provide education and guidance to patients and their families on home exercise programs, adaptive equipment, and safety measures.

Documentation and Reporting:
- Accurately document patient progress, including treatments performed, patient responses, and any changes in condition.
- Ensure that all patient records are up to date, complete, and in compliance with facility and regulatory standards.
- Report any patient concerns or significant changes in condition to the supervising Occupational Therapist promptly.

Assist with Patient Assessments:
- Assist the Occupational Therapist during patient evaluations, providing input on functional abilities and limitations.
- Monitor and assess patient progress throughout the course of therapy and suggest adjustments to treatment plans when necessary.

Equipment and Safety:
- Set up and maintain therapy equipment, ensuring it is safe, clean, and in proper working order.
- Ensure the therapy environment is organized, safe, and conducive to effective treatment.
Qualifications:
- Education: Associate's degree from an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program.
- Certification: Current certification as a Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA) through the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).
- Licensure: Active COTA license.
- Experience: Previous experience in a rehabilitation, long-term care, or outpatient setting is preferred but not required.
- Skills:
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport with patients, families, and staff.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to follow detailed treatment plans and adapt interventions to meet patient needs.
- Knowledge of therapeutic techniques, equipment, and safety practices.
