The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) works under the supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist to provide physical therapy treatments and interventions to patients. The PTA assists patients in improving their mobility, strength, and physical function through therapeutic exercises, treatments, and other rehabilitation techniques. This role is essential in helping patients recover from injuries, surgeries, and chronic conditions, while promoting independence and improving quality of life.
Key Responsibilities:
Patient Care and Treatment:
- Provide therapeutic exercises, treatments, and modalities as directed by the supervising Physical Therapist, including strength training, mobility exercises, and balance activities.
- Monitor patient progress and modify treatment programs based on the patient's response and feedback from the Physical Therapist.
- Assist patients with exercises, stretches, and activities designed to improve their mobility, strength, coordination, and balance.
- Ensure patients perform exercises correctly and safely to prevent injury and maximize therapeutic outcomes.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with the supervising Physical Therapist, other healthcare professionals, and rehabilitation team members to deliver coordinated patient care.
- Communicate regularly with the Physical Therapist regarding patient progress, any changes in condition, and any challenges encountered during therapy.
- Educate patients and their families on exercise techniques, safety precautions, and strategies to maintain progress outside of therapy sessions.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate, timely, and detailed documentation of patient treatments, progress, and outcomes in compliance with facility policies and regulatory standards.
- Report any changes in patient condition or concerns regarding treatment to the Physical Therapist and document in the patient’s medical records.
Equipment Management and Safety:
- Set up, operate, and maintain physical therapy equipment, ensuring it is clean, functional, and safe for use during treatments.
- Ensure patient safety at all times, adhering to proper lifting, transferring, and exercise techniques to prevent injury.
- Assist in maintaining a clean and organized therapy environment, including setting up treatment areas and cleaning equipment.
Patient and Family Education:
- Instruct patients and their families on exercises they can do at home to improve mobility, strength, and balance.
- Provide guidance on lifestyle changes and body mechanics that support recovery and prevent further injury.
- Answer any questions or concerns patients or families may have about treatment plans and expected outcomes.
- Education: Associate’s degree from an accredited Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program.
- Licensure: Active PTA license.
- Experience: Previous experience in a rehabilitation, long-term care, or outpatient setting is preferred but not required.
