What are the responsibilities and job description for the MDS Regional Support Nurse position at LionStone Care?
The Regional MDS Nurse serves as a clinical and regulatory expert in Minimum Data Set (MDS) assessments and Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) processes across multiple skilled nursing facilities. This role ensures compliance with federal and state guidelines, optimizes reimbursement through accurate documentation and coding, and provides training and support to facility-level MDS Coordinators and interdisciplinary teams. The Regional MDS Nurse collaborates closely with facility leadership, corporate compliance, and reimbursement departments to enhance clinical outcomes and financial performance.
Key Responsibilities:

Provide on-site and remote support to facility MDS teams, ensuring accurate and timely completion of MDS assessments.

Conduct regular audits of MDS documentation, Care Area Assessments (CAAs), and care plans to ensure regulatory compliance and identify training needs.

Support and mentor facility MDS Coordinators, providing education on RAI guidelines, ICD-10 coding, PDPM case mix, and Medicare/Medicaid regulations.

Assist in new facility or staff onboarding, system implementations, and transitions.

Serve as a resource for clinical reimbursement strategies, working collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams to maximize appropriate reimbursement.

Monitor Quality Measures (QMs) and CASPER reports, identifying trends and recommending action plans for improvement.

Provide guidance during Medicare and Medicaid surveys, audits, or appeals.

Ensure consistency and standardization of MDS and clinical documentation processes across all assigned locations.

Travel regularly to facilities as needed (up to 75%).
Required:

Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing.

Minimum 3 years of experience as an MDS Coordinator, with at least 1 year in a multi-site or regional support role.

Deep knowledge of MDS 3.0, RAI process, PDPM, ICD-10 coding, and CMS guidelines.

Strong understanding of Medicare, Medicaid, and Managed Care reimbursement systems.

Proven experience training and mentoring MDS staff.

Ability to travel to assigned facilities.
Preferred:

RAC-CT (Resident Assessment Coordinator – Certified) credential through AAPACN.

Experience using EHRs such as PointClickCare.

Prior experience in a regional or corporate clinical reimbursement position.
