We are seeking a Regulatory & Market Access Lead who will own the full lifecycle of certification, listing, and utility market onboarding across our ESS portfolio. This role functions as the Revenue Gatekeeper, ensuring every product meets required safety standards and qualifies for high-value incentive programs. You will work cross-functionally with engineering, product, manufacturing partners, Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs), and utility program administrators to drive compliant, market-ready releases.
Position Summary
The Regulatory & Market Access Lead manages all technical certifications, utility program compliance, and market access requirements for Lion Energy’s ESS platforms. You will translate regulatory standards into actionable engineering guidance, manage NRTL relationships, and ensure our products achieve and maintain required safety, interoperability, and grid-support certifications.
Responsibilities & DutiesCertification Ownership
- Own end-to-end safety and grid-interactive certification lifecycles for ESS platforms.
- Manage UL and related filings, including UL 9540/9540A, UL 1741 (SA/SB), UL 1973, and FCC Part 15B.
- Lead technical applications and ongoing compliance for U.S. state and utility-level programs such as:
- CEC listings
- SGIP
- Regional Demand Response and incentive programs
- Ensure products remain eligible for financial incentives and market participation.
- Collaborate with Embedded Systems and API teams to meet technical requirements for:
- Virtual Power Plants (VPP)
- Grid service programs
- Ensure compliance with telemetry, event response times, and data interval requirements.
- Manage adherence to grid communication standards, including:
- CSIP
- IEEE 2030.5
- Oversee firmware compliance for utility interconnection requirements (e.g., Rule 21).
- Provide “Compliance-by-Design” guidance for inverter and hardware partners.
- Support accelerated time-to-market through Delta certification paths.
- Serve as primary contact for NRTLs and program administrators.
- Coordinate quotes, testing schedules, documentation submissions, and technical inquiries.
- Review schematics, technical documentation, and partner test reports to identify risks before submission.
- Prevent certification delays by proactively resolving discrepancies.
- Manage ongoing reporting, firmware audits, listing renewals, and compliance maintenance across active markets.
Required Education & ExperienceEducation
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related technical field.
- Equivalent professional experience or specialized military technical training considered.
- 5 years in regulatory compliance, market access, or systems engineering within Renewable Energy or Power Electronics.
- Experience in other regulated high-voltage categories (EV charging, industrial automation, aerospace power systems) is also applicable.
- Demonstrated success with UL 9540 and UL 1741 SB certifications or comparable experience with standards such as:
- IEC 62109
- UL 2231
- MIL-STD power requirements
- Ability to interpret electrical schematics and understand firmware behavior related to:
- Grid-support functions
- Communication protocols (Modbus, IEEE 2030.5, etc.)
- Exceptional technical writing ability.
- Comfortable translating complex regulatory language into clear engineering requirements.
