Mission and Vision
The Elementary School Counselor supports the Elementary School Principal and the Dean of Students by:
- By ensuring that all aspects of the division are consistent with the mission and vision
- By developing and maintaining the character and learning culture within the division.
- By developing and maintaining an academic program consistent with the mission and vision
- By collaborating with the leadership team to formulate and monitor school-wide strategic goals
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist students in the areas of academic development,citizenship development, as well as socioemotional development
- Collaborate with faculty, staff, and families to better understand and meet the needs of all students
- Provide IEP mandated and at-risk counseling
- Provide individual and small group as needed using research-based practices
- Coordinate 504 process
- Make appropriate referrals of students and parents to outside agencies and specialists when necessary
- Make oneself a visible body in school by participating in a variety of activities that contribute to the school’s effectiveness
- Continually plan, evaluate, and revise the school counseling program
- Pursue continuous professional development and growth
- Promote an understanding and appreciation for diverse populations
- Develop, review, and revise an educational plan for each student
- Monitor and advise students and parents as to progress toward promotion
Essential Duties & Responsibilities(included but not limited to):
Counseling
- Provide individual planning sessions for each student in the areas of academic planning, social/emotional health
- Conduct small group counseling sessions in response to identified needs within the school system. Topics may include academic skill-building, social development, conflict resolution, family issues, making healthy choices
- Interpret tests, student data, and other assessments and appropriately discuss results with students and parents in a counseling environment
Collaborating
- Provide information and skills to parents, school staff, administration, and the community to assist them in helping students in academic and socioemotional development
- Take a leadership role in working counseling content into the curriculum, staff development, and parent education programs
- Assist families in addressing school-related problems; refer parents to outside agencies and specialists when necessary
- Be a member of the Multi Tiered Support System (MTSS) Committee
Coordinating
- Advocate for equal access to programs and services for all students
- Coordinate the scheduling of mandated and at-risk counseling services
Individual Planning
- Plan and execute sessions based on student needs.
- Plan and execute Social Emotional Learning classes.
Program Management
- Review the school counseling program annually with other school counselors and administrators.
- Articulate the school-counseling program to students, parents, teachers, staff, and the community
- Develop and maintain skills needed to utilize technology systems and participate in professional development opportunities
School System
- Participate in school decision-making and in activities that contribute to the effectiveness of the school.
- Cooperate and collaborate with other professionals in enhancing the education of students.
- Communicate with administrators, teachers, staff, parents, and students as to the role of the school counselor in the overall educational process.
- Support whole school systems such as arrival, dismissal, lunch, and recess.
- Teach Social Emotional Learning classes to students.
Professionalism
- Adhere to the ethical standards of state and national school counselor associations
- Adhere to best practices prescribed by state and national school counselor associations
- Demonstrate knowledge of local policies and state and federal laws about school counseling
- Demonstrate personal growth and professional development
Minimum Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in School Counseling from an accredited college or university
- Active New York State Certification in School Counseling
Preferred Experience:
- 1 Year of experience serving students in an inner-city school preferred
- Bilingual preferred (Spanish/English)
- A passion for urban education and a commitment to the LION mission
- Articulate and professional demeanor with initiative and leadership skills
- Flexible and able to work in a team environment
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment under tight deadlines
All compensation is aligned with our LION pay scale. Salary is commensurate with experience, education, and certification status (Teacher positions only). While the posted range reflects the anticipated compensation, the exact compensation will be determined based on a variety of factors, including alignment with qualifications, internal and external equity.
