About the role:
The Public Health Nurse Practitioner (PHNP) or Physician Assistant (PA) is responsible for directing others and providing patient care in a caring, professional and cost-effective public health clinic. Under the direction of the Clinical Services Branch Supervisor, the employee will be involved in clinic operations including patient care, documentation, policy input, equipment and supply maintenance, community health planning, program implementation and evaluation, and outcome reporting.
  • Performs advanced patient medical and health assessments. 
  • Orders, performs and interprets laboratory tests and procedures that serve as the basis for disease management for all age groups. 
  • Provides patient consultation, referral, and health education/prevention programs in consultation with Medical Advisor, Public Health Nurse Supervisor, and Health Department staff.
  • Participates in community health systems and clinical operations, acting as a role model in ensuring a customer-driven medical and health service delivery model.
  • Participates in the ongoing evaluation of clinic systems to ensure quality services and cost effectiveness including department continuous quality improvement.
  • Prescribes and/or dispenses prescription only drugs, over-the-counter drugs, medical devices and/or appliances.
  • Coordinates medical resources with community social service resources to meet patient needs. 
  • Participates in agency and community efforts to identify and implement evidence-based programs to address patient health needs. 
  • Participates in emergency response training, drills and situations.
  • Participates in staff meetings to address changes in policies and procedures, maintains staff communication and ensures high-quality patient care. 
  • May perform tasks including, but not limited to, responding to or routing inquiries and directing individuals and clients to appropriate agencies.
  • Recommends interventions to modify behavior associated with health risks.
  • Educates patients about self-management, tailoring instructions to patient’s individual circumstances.
  • Identifies factors affecting the health of a community (e.g., equity, income, education, environment) and the ways diversity may influence policies, programs, services, and the health of a community.
  • Identifies assets and resources that can be used for improving the health of a community and contributes to assessments of community health status and factors influencing health in a community.
  • Contributes to the development of program goals and objectives and the implementation of the organizational strategic plan.
Candidates must have one of the following: 
  • Nurse Practitioner (NP) that meets national credentialing criteria and is licensed in Iowa with a minimum of three (3) years working as a family Nurse Practitioner. 
OR 
  • Physician Assistant (PA) that meets national certification criteria and is licensed in Iowa with a minimum of three (3) years of prior clinical experience under supervision of a physician or in collaboration with a healthcare professional.

8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
