General Manager

Department:

Plant Operations

FLSA Status:

Exempt

Employment Type:

Full-Time

Position Overview

The Plant Manager is responsible for the safe, efficient, and profitable operation of a precast concrete manufacturing facility. This role provides strategic and hands-on leadership across all production, quality, safety, maintenance, and workforce functions — ensuring the plant consistently delivers high-quality precast products on schedule and in compliance with all regulatory and company standards. The Plant Manager drives a culture of continuous improvement, operational discipline, and employee development in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

Key Responsibilities

Production & Operations Management

  • Direct all daily plant operations in alignment with company policies, production schedules, and customer commitments.
  • Oversee pouring schedules to ensure molds are staged, prepared, and ready for production as required.
  • Allocate labor across production teams to meet incentive efficiency targets and shift output goals.
  • Partner with scheduling and dispatch to align product readiness with delivery requirements and fleet availability.
  • Coordinate inbound and outbound material flow with forklift operators and dispatch; enforce proper product handling protocols to minimize damage and rework.
  • Monitor raw material and finished goods inventory in collaboration with purchasing to prevent production interruptions.
  • In the event of equipment failures, non-conforming product, or other disruptions, lead rapid response efforts to protect customer commitments and conduct root cause analysis to prevent recurrence.

Safety, Quality & Compliance

  • Champion a safety-first culture across all shifts and departments; enforce OSHA, EPA, and company safety standards without exception.
  • Lead safety meetings, incident investigations, and corrective action implementation to drive continuous improvement in safety performance.
  • Partner with Quality Control to ensure all precast products meet engineering specifications, industry standards (e.g., NPCA), and customer requirements.
  • Drive ongoing scrap reduction, rework minimization, and quality yield improvements through data-driven analysis and corrective action.
  • Ensure plant housekeeping standards are maintained consistently across all areas and at the close of each shift.

Maintenance & Facilities

  • Collaborate with the maintenance department to ensure all equipment, tooling, and molds are maintained in optimal working condition.
  • Identify capital needs and equipment upgrade opportunities; develop business cases and coordinate implementation with leadership.
  • Manage environmental and seasonal facility considerations, including energy efficiency and building systems (e.g., minimizing door open time during cold weather operations).

Workforce Leadership & Development

  • Recruit, develop, and retain a skilled and motivated production workforce in partnership with Human Resources.
  • Select, train, and mentor plant supervisors and team leads; build bench strength and ensure coverage plans are in place for all key roles.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews, deliver coaching and feedback, and address performance issues promptly and professionally.
  • Schedule and lead plant-wide meetings to communicate priorities, performance results, and safety updates.
  • Control and minimize overtime while balancing production needs; optimize staffing levels through proactive workforce planning.
  • Attend corporate training and leadership meetings as required.

Reporting & Continuous Improvement

  • Ensure accurate and timely preparation of all production reports, labor reports, and operational metrics.
  • Analyze plant performance data to identify trends, inefficiencies, and improvement opportunities; implement corrective actions with measurable outcomes.
  • Lead or support lean manufacturing, 5S, and other continuous improvement initiatives across the facility.
  • Develop and manage departmental budgets; control costs and report on variances with actionable explanations.
Qualifications:

Required

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in precast concrete manufacturing, with at least 3 years in a plant leadership or operations management role.
  • Deep working knowledge of precast concrete production processes, including form work, reinforcement, pouring, curing, and finishing.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and hold accountable an hourly and salaried workforce.
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and a proven track record of building safety-first plant cultures.
  • Familiarity with quality standards applicable to precast concrete (e.g., NPCA plant certification, ACI standards).
  • Proficiency in production planning, scheduling, and labor cost management.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and mix designs.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with ERP or production management systems preferred.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or a related field — or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • NPCA certification or experience in an NPCA-certified facility.
  • Experience with lean manufacturing, 5S, or Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Prior experience in a PE-backed, multi-site manufacturing environment.
